Whether you want your hair or nails done or want to relax and recharge with a facial or full body massage, local spas offer an array of services that allow you to pamper yourself.
Services at The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg include massages, facials, body treatments, hair/makeup, as well as manicures and pedicures.
“You can pick one service or have many services and make a day of it, like a staycation,” says Denise Haddaway, spa director. “You don’t have to be a guest here. Anybody can use it. Just call and make an appointment.”
The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg also offers century-inspired signature experiences. The two most popular of those are the 17th century Detoxifying Herbal Wrap and Hot Stone Massage, and the African Traditional Bath & Strengthening Massage from the 19th century.
“The century-inspired signature experiences were created by the historians at the apothecary, using ingredients from those centuries,” says Haddaway. “Each one is different.”
The Giving Tree, a boutique spa located at the Wyndham Governor’s Green Resort on Mooretown Road, specializes in massages, facials and body treatments. Massage services available there include European massages, therapeutic deep tissue massages, hot stone massages and reflexology as well as massages designed specifically for pregnant women and couples.
Like The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg, anyone can utilize the spa services, not just guests at the resort.
Dan Dunn, owner of The Giving Tree, points out that treating yourself to a day at the spa is important for your health.
“It’s about taking care of yourself,” he says.
Routine massages can help improve metabolism and agility and alleviate muscle and body aches and pains. Massages also can remove toxins from the body and enable you to sleep more soundly.
Facials and body scrubs are also important for wellness.
“Your skin is your largest organ, and you need to keep your skin in good condition in order for it to flourish,” Dunn said.
Lisa Russell, a massage therapist with Massage Luxe in Courthouse Commons, agrees.
“I would recommend a monthly massage for maintenance,” she says. “It’s like going to the doctor, plus it just feels good. I am a firm believer in ‘me’ time, especially for mothers. It helps us function better in the world. As mothers, we tend to take care of others, but we also need to take care of ourselves.”
Massage Luxe offers monthly memberships as well as add-on services to your massage experience, including deep relief, scalp treatments, scented foot scrubs, aromatherapy as well as hot stones.
A day at the spa is wonderful any time of year, though local spas tend to be busier in February around Valentine’s Day.
“It’s our biggest and busiest time,” Dunn says. “Couples are looking for something to do together.”
