Christy Gutowski moved over to the Tribune’s investigations team in 2018 after nearly a decade on the metro staff. She was part of a team of reporters who uncovered the true nature of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s crimes against boys he coached decades earlier before he entered politics. Her coverage with colleague Bill Ruthhart on Illinois’ child welfare system garnered the Chicago Headline Club’s 2012 Watchdog Award and the national Child Welfare League of America’s Anna Quindlen Award in 2013. She focuses her work on stories about criminal justice, public corruption and issues that impact the everyday man. Gutowski received a master's degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield and is a graduate of Southern Illinois University. A native of the south suburbs, she lives in DuPage County.
