College basketball Top 25: Big jumps for Arizona, Florida State

Did you forget to include Arizona on your contender list?

The Wildcats reminded everyone of their worth with an impressive 96-85 victory against UCLA on Saturday, earning them a bump into the top 10 in my rankings.

Arizona wasn’t the only team to take a leap.

Here’s how I voted this week in the Associated Press poll:

  1. (1) Villanova (19-1)
  2. (2) Kansas (18-1)
  3. (4) Baylor (18-1)
  4. (5) Kentucky (17-2)
  5. (6) Gonzaga (19-0)
  6. (3) UCLA (19-2)
  7. (16) Florida State (18-2)
  8. (15) Arizona (18-2)
  9. (8) North Carolina (18-3)
  10. (10) Oregon (18-2)
  11. (14) Butler (17-3)
  12. (9) Louisville (16-4)
  13. (11) Notre Dame (17-3)
  14. (18) Virginia (15-3)
  15. (13) Duke (15-4)
  16. (19) Wisconsin (16-3)
  17. (21) Cincinnati (17-2)
  18. (20) Purdue (16-4)
  19. (7) West Virginia (15-4)
  20. (12) Creighton (18-2)
  21. (22) Saint Mary’s (17-2)
  22. (25) Maryland (17-2)
  23. (17) Florida (14-5)
  24. (24) South Carolina (15-4)
  25. (23) Xavier (14-5)

Dropped out: None

  • Florida State, like Arizona, also rocketed up the rankings into the top 10 from No. 16. The Seminoles are 7-1 against the top 25 RPI teams (9-1 against the top 50). Nobody had as sterling a week as Florida State, which beat Notre Dame and Louisville at home.
  • West Virginia plummeted 12 places this week after losing to Oklahoma and Kansas State.  All four of the Mountaineers’ losses have come against unranked teams. They need to stop the bleeding or they'll be out of my rankings next week.
  • Xavier was already clinging to a spot in the rankings last week at No. 23. The Musketeers loss to Creighton, another ranked team, wasn’t quite enough to boot them. Their other three losses to top-25 teams were all on the road.
