Historical artifact gets a lift

A crew of workers from Newport News Shipbuilding worked Friday at The Mariners’ Museum on the task of removing — and ultimately replacing — the support structure that has sat beneath the historic gun turret of the ironclad ship USS Monitor since the turret was pulled from the depths of the Atlantic in 2002.

The new support structure, which is expected to be in place in about a week, will provide better access to the crew working on conserving the prized artifact. Will Hoffman, the museum’s director of conservation, calls this move “the most critical step in this process since the actual recovery.”
