Fiction

“The Cruiser: A Dan Lenson Novel” by David Poyer. Fiction/Military/Naval thriller. Capt. Daniel Lenson assumes command of cruiser USS Savo Island at its most vulnerable—run aground on a sandbar in the Mediterranean Sea. Lenson must navigate the ship, its new-to-him crew and the ship’s brand-new/classified missile-defense system, on a secret mission while tensions build between Israel and Iraq. This is Poyer’s 14th book in the Dan Lenson series. Poyer lives on the Eastern Shore.

“Deviation (Imitation Series, Book 2)” by Virginia Beach’s Heather Hildenbrand. Fiction/Young adult science fiction romance. In this sequel to “Imitation,” 18-year-old Ven, clone of Raven Rogen, continues her exploration of life outside the lab, including getting close to Raven’s boyfriend. But is living Raven’s life enough?

“Flying High: FBI vs. The Mob” by Jim Healy of Virginia Beach. Fiction/Mystery-Detective. FBI agent Del Dickerson mixes it up with the Mafia in an adventure that takes him from New York to California. In “Lucky Daze: FBI vs. The Mob Rematch” Del Dickerson is back, this time chasing mobsters through the Sierra Nevada mountains. Healy is a 32-year veteran of the FBI.

“Madness in Brewster Square” by Peninsula author Narielle Living. Fiction/Cozy mystery. When Ava Maria Sophia Cecilia is conned into helping brother Giuseppe with an investigation into the paranormal, she expects nothing but boredom but becomes embroiled in a murder investigation instead.

“The Marriage Match” by York County’s Tracy March. Fiction/Contemporary romance. In this third book in March’s Suddenly Smitten sweet romance series, Tycoon Trent Hawthorne hopes to pick a bride during a “The Bachelor”-like marketing campaign. Then he shares a kiss with employee Cynthia Sawyer, who is definitely not on the list of prospective brides. On sale Jan. 19—special 99-cent launch price for eBook effective through Jan. 25.

“Merry Christmas in the Sea” by Lucy Herman, Virginia Beach. Fiction/Children’s. Christmas might be over, but holiday stories can be timeless. In this children’s book, inhabitants of the sea decorate and spread cheer in their underwater world. Herman is a former elementary and middle-school teacher for Norfolk Public Schools.

“Tamed Lightning” by Susana Elizabeth Acosta. Fiction/Young adult mystery. Teen brother and sister Audrey and Kennedy investigate the possible kidnapping of their 5-year-old brother, complicated by Audrey’s troubling travels through time and neighbors who are more nosy than helpful. Acosta, a native of Virginia Beach, spent several years in the region while working on her graduate studies at the National Institute of Aerospace.

“Travels with Ellyn” by Frances Ellen Walsh of Newport News. Illustrations by John S. Atkinson. Fiction/Fantasy. Princess Ellyn of Aylesworth takes a 25-day journey of spiritual awareness. From the back cover: “Each episode exemplifies a Metaphysical Law of the Universe; faith in a positive outcome prevails.”

“White Tiger Legend” by Hu Yuan Nabe. Fiction/Middle grade/Fantasy. Shaolin Monk Zi, who finds himself the sole survivor of his monastery following an attack by the Red Dragon, embarks on a journey in which he must face the five challenges of Power, Grace, Courage, Wisdom and “The Source.” Nabe is the pen name for Walsingham Academy graduate Kory Martin Juul.

Nonfiction

“Cabin Journals: From Lowlands to Highlands to Heart” by Corinna Craft of Norfolk. Nonfiction/Travelogue. The former law student and college instructor shares her budget-friendly travel adventures through the backwoods of the commonwealth. Written in a humorous narrative style, the book includes notes about Virginia history and culture as well as photographs and even Scripture references.

“Historically Black Colleges and Universities: What You Should Know” by Alphonso W. Knight. Hampton University alumnus and former executive director of the Hampton Alumni Association offers an alphabetical guide to students and parents seeking information on historically black colleges across the nation. Includes pertinent information on each, such as location, cost and enrollment, plus a brief description and history.

“Poetry for Peace, Power and Love: The Silver Anniversary Collection” by the Rev. Dr. Judi Love Bowman. Bowman celebrates 25 years of ministerial service with this new collection of 75 poems and accompanying Scripture. Bowman, a Peninsula native, was named among the “50 Leaders of the Future” and “100 Women of Promise” by Ebony and Good Housekeeping magazines, respectively.

“Sometimes All You Have is Happy: A Guide to Obtaining Happiness While Awaiting Your Dreams” by Alesha Brown. Self-help. The Hampton author is on a mission to prevent suicide and depression. In this slim workbook with exercises, she shares her personal journey and lessons learned on her “transition from a victim to a victor.”

“The Tall Man in the Dark Suit, the World War II Ship Diary and letters of a German Kriegsmarine Cadet” translated by Frauke Elber of Newport News. Elber’s uncle, Guenter Braun, served in the German Navy and died when his ship, U-436, sunk in the North Atlantic in May 1943. The book contains his entries from his first assignment aboard freighter-turned-mine-sweeper Sperrbrecher1, through deployments to France, including several well-known battles such as the Channel Dash of battleships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen. Elber donated the original log book to The Mariners’ Museum Library in Newport News.
