At Child Development Resources annual Superhero 5K, the costumes are no small matter.
Last year, special events coordinator Betsy Edwards saw an entire family decked out as “The Incredibles.”
Development associate Jenny O’Donnell has seen a number of creative, funny costumes, but for her, the kids’ costumes are always most exciting.
“To them, they’re not wearing a costume,” she said. “They are a superhero that day, so they’re living the moment.”
Start readying your costumes for Aug. 13. The Superhero 5K will take place at The Vineyards of Williamsburg Clubhouse.
It’s a long-running event, and Child Development Resources’ second largest fundraiser. This year, however, coincides with the organization’s 50th anniversary.
“We’ve got some fun 50th anniversary surprises for the race,” Edwards said.
Last year, the race raised close to $40,000. This year, the fundraising goal is $50,000.
As of Friday, the 5k website indicated nearly 43 percent of the goal had been raised. Edwards said that number would increase, as she planned to update the website.
This year, CDR is encouraging all registrants to take the “$50 for the 50th Challenge,” raising $50 to help meet the fundraising goal.
Funds will support CDR in serving nearly 1,000 children and their families each year.
“I think that CDR every year touches a whole new demographic of families in our area,” Edwards said. “Every year, we’re introducing ourselves to a new segment in the community.”
Last year, close to 800 people attended the Superhero 5K. Not all ran or walked the 5K. The event also includes a one-mile fun run, children’s activities and a post-race celebration. Edwards said to expect music, costume contests, pancakes, ice cream and much more.
“It’s such a family friendly event,” Edwards said. “You’re bringing moms, dads, brothers, sisters.”
“Whether they’re participating or not, it’ really a wonderful morning.”
