The U.S. victory over Japan in the FIFA Women's World Cup championship Sunday night on Fox scored the highest rating ever in metered markets for a soccer game on a single network.
The rating of 15.2/27 (15.2 percent of all TV sets in the metered markets) surpassed the 13.3 rating for the women's final between the U.S. and China in 1999.
(The second figure after the slash is the audience share or percentage of sets that were in use at the time. The 27 in the 15.2/27 figure means 27 percent of all sets in use Sunday night between 7 and 9 p.m. were tuned to the game.)
Sunday night's audience peaked at 18.3/31 from 8:45 to 9 p.m. That included the U.S. team’s winning celebration.
Fast national ratings, which will tell how many people watched, are expected from Nielsen and Fox later today.
UPDATE: The telecast averaged 25.4 million viewers topping out at 30.9 million between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m. (ET).

43.2 million viewers watched all or part of last night’s final.
Baltimore was not one of the Top 10 markets for Sunday's final. But it did finish sixth in average audience for all seven games.
