Saturday morning, October 3, at 9:30, members of Williamsburg Area Bicyclists (WAB) and other friends of Larry Skalak will gather at the a memorial erected in his honor adjacent to the Virginia Capital Trail near the entrance to Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Appropriately, this memorial to the dedicated cyclist is a bicycle "fixit station", consisting of a tire pump, work stand with an assortment of tools, a bench and a bike rack. The facility will be deeded over to James City County
A lifetime fitness and adventure enthusiast, Larry took up cycling in 2008 and in the short span of six years completed five solo trans America trips and cycled over 80,000 miles. More important, he was a great friend to his fellow cyclists, often quietly offering to lend a hand when help was needed. He suffered a fatal heart attack last year in the Seattle, Washington area as he was preparing to embark upon another cross country trip. It is especially fitting that this facility is on the Virginia Capital Trail which is part of a popular trans America bike route.
