Police & Fire host multi-jurisdictional maritime incident exercise

On July 22, James City County Police Underwater Search and Recovery Team and James City County Fire Department Maritime Incident Response Team hosted a multi-jurisdictional maritime incident exercise on the James River near the First Colony Beach and Marina. James City County Police Department Marine Patrol, York County Fire Department Maritime Incident Response, Newport News Fire Department Maritime Response Unit, and Newport News Police Special Operations/Marine Patrol Unit all participated in this exercise.

The scenario presented to participants began with a call to James City County Emergency Communications Center from boaters reporting that someone in their party had been swimming in the area around the boat and did not surface. Marine and dive units responded and began a rescue mission searching for the missing swimmer. Soon after, the scenario turned to a recovery operation as units used various sonar tools to continue the search. Pre-dive and post-dive physicals were also performed on divers.

This practical exercise created a real-life scenario providing all of the departments the opportunity to work alongside each other in partnership, familiarization with the use of equipment in unison and experience in search, rescue and recovery operations.
