The Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation has provided a grant to Postpartum Support Virginia to launch the Peninsula Maternal Mental Health Coalition, which will bring together community stakeholders in Hampton / Newport News to address postpartum depression in a coordinated, comprehensive, community-wide approach.
Postpartum depression is the MOST COMMON complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 1 in 5 new mothers. Each year, approximately 5,000 women will give birth in Hampton / Newport News; at least 1,000 women will experience postpartum depression. The goal of the Maternal Mental Health Coalition is that all childbearing women are educated about and screened for postpartum depression and have access to help.
