That Damn Mary Brewing Company Opens in Hayes

That Damn Mary Brewing Company (TDM) opened its doors last month to craft beer lovers in Gloucester and surrounding counties. The taproom and brewery are located on three and a half acres on Rt. 17 in Hayes and are attached to Mobjack Tavern (formerly Goodfella's).

Owner and "Damn Mary Overlord," MJ Anderson, is passionate about serving high quality, full flavored craft beer in an environment that celebrates individuality and supports community. The brewery's tagline, "Exceptional Beers for the Very Mary," supports that idea.

"The tagline sets up the concept behind the brewery," said Anderson, whose initials stand for Mary Jane. "It's meant to support that whatever makes you 'Mary' (happy, rockin', in your groove, or on your wild edge)-you're in the right place and space-and we've got a great beer for you."

"The brewing program finds its roots in beers that are not only exceptional in taste but are made with local ingredients whenever possible. As much as we can, we use Virginia hops and grains from Northern Neck farmers," said Anderson, who lives in Northumberland County.

The brewery has a seven-barrel system for mainstays and a half-barrel pilot system for experimental brews and collaborations, said Anderson. We're currently offering seven brews: an amber ale, a milk stout, a Gose kettle sour ale, an American-style pale ale, an American IPA, a New England IPA and a light lager. Our plan is to keep things fresh and sell everything we brew on-site, said Anderson.

Although the two businesses are separate, customers can order Mobjack Tavern pub menu items (artisan pizza, handcrafted burgers, seafood and more) from a kiosk in the taproom to enjoy with their TDM pints.

The eclectic interior, who's vibe and colors reflect TDM's logo and tagline, was designed by Christine Whitaker Wiggins of Paisley Interiors. "We also have dog-friendly outdoor seating and plan to have live music and special events designed to 'bring out your Mary,'" said Anderson.

TDM team members include Anderson, Pamela Witthaus (Chief Mary Maker), Susan Johnson (Chief Executioner), Starke Jett (Damn Mary Underlord), Cassie Leichty (Chief Establishment Mender), and beertenders: Christian Johnson, Lisa Shivers, Marnie Leichty and Corey Hassman. The team is looking for DamNation volunteers to help serve tasty beers, "raise the stage," help with events and otherwise bring their Mary to the party.
