Pictures: Secrets of Colonial Williamsburg's Governor's Palace unearthed in milestone 1930 dig

The milestone Colonial Williamsburg dig that unearthed the surprisingly well-preserved if elusive foundations of the Governor's Palace during the summer of 1930 set the stage for the reconstruction of the landmark structure by recovering otherwise unobtainable information about its plan, materials and finish. It also raised the standards for the foundation's excavations, which for the first time were supervised by an archaeologist and focused on artifacts as well as architectural elements. -- Mark St. John Erickson
