The York County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution on Tuesday to give the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Inc. $1 million over 10 years to support the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
The funds will begin to be disburse in fiscal year 2016, which begins on July 1.
The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is in the process of building a new $50 million facility with a reconfigured site plan and an 80,000 square-foot building that provides expanded gallery exhibits, enhanced interpretive programs and innovative educational programs, according to a county memorandum. The new museum will replace the Yorktown Victory Center that has chronicled the American Revolution since April 1976, the memorandum said.
The Yorktown Victory Center has been a major tourism driver for the area but its existing buildings and grounds placed limitations on exhibits and programs, the memorandum said.
In November 2013, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation requested funding from the county to help pay for programing, exhibits and operations at the new museum. The county reached a consensus plan to donate $1 million over 10 years.
The interim County Administrator Mark Carter recommended that the board adopt the proposed resolution to contribute to the foundation and the board approved it on Tuesday.
