The House Intelligence Committee on Saturday released a declassified, redacted version of a memorandum rebutting claims by their Republican counterparts that the FBI and Obama Justice Department abused power in their surveillance of Trump-connected individuals while investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election. In the so-called “Nunes memo,” Republicans claimed that prosecutors sought wiretapping authority in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court system without presenting evidence of potential bias in their source material. After its release, President Donald Trump tweeted, “This memo totally vindicates ‘Trump’ in probe.”

Democrats have said the Nunes memo was “cherry-picked,” and left out key context. President Trump ordered redactions be made to the Democrats’ memo two weeks ago before it could be released, citing national security concerns.
