Fifty people are dead after a terrorist attack at Pulse, a gay nightclub near downtown Orlando, early Sunday morning.

A lone gunman began shooting at the nightclub on Orange Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. and held hostages until after 5 a.m., when Orlando police SWAT and other agencies entered the building. Approximately 30 hostages were freed.

The shooter, later identifed as Omar Mateen of Port St. Lucie, was killed in a shootout with authorities.

A state of emergency has been declared in Orange County after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. In addition to the 50 killed, another 53 were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
