Michael A. Gregory has joined Williamsburg retirement community Patriots Colony as its new executive chef.

Gregory, a York County native, has previously worked at fine dining restaurants in Colonial Williamsburg, including the Williamsburg Inn. He said a lot of his culinary growth came during his time at the Inn working under Executive Chef Hans Schadler.

“I took his advice and went into the apprentice program,” Gregory said. “I had fallen in love with food and knew it was serious business.”

After a 15-year career at Colonial Williamsburg, Gregory left the area to lead five-star fine dining resorts across the East Coast, but chose to return to Williamsburg to operate the three restaurants at Patriots Colony.

He will serve as executive chef for Archie’s Tavern, a casual bar and grill, The Bistro, an upscale buffet, Fireside, a fine dining restaurant and The Terrace, an outdoor diner serving food from The Bistro and the Tavern.

“I wanted to start working my way back to Virginia, so when the job at Patriots Colony came open I was immediately intrigued,” he said. “Residents here have lived around the world, they know good food. We’re going to show them good food in a variety of ways.”

Gregory aims to provide dining options that are nutritious and varied, and hopes to change menus seasonally. He also will be responsible for overseeing take-out orders for residents and food service for memory care unit and nursing home residents.

The Virginia Beer Company will host an event to benefit the R.F. Wilkinson YMCA’s Bright Beginnings Program on July 25.

The third SPACE Concert and Silent Auction will be held 5-9 p.m., and all proceeds will go toward providing new backpacks, school supplies and school clothes for children in need.

Guests will enjoy live music from Billy Joe Daniel, Virginia Beer Company craft beers and items up for grabs at a silent auction. Gloucester-based food truck Creekside Catering Co. will serve food from a specialized catering menu.

The event will be sponsored by Chesapeake Bank, and YMCA organizers aim to raise $10,000 to serve at least 70 local students in need.
