For the past 30 years, Drive Safe Hampton Roads has worked to get old and potentially dangerous child car seats out of residents’ cars.
Through Feb. 28, the organization will collect child safety seats at the Lightfoot Walmart on Rochambeau Drive in York County, according to a Drive Safe Hampton Roads news release.
Turn your old, dangerous and broken car seats in throughout February and the organization will give you a $5 Walmart gift card for each seat, up to two, the release said.
Waste Management will recycle the seats so they never end up in a car again, according to the release.
The organization reminded parents the law requires all children younger than 8 to be properly restrained in an car seat, the release said.
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading killer of Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Traffic accidents and crashes killed nearly 900 children ages 5-14 in 2016, according to the CDC.
In that same year, 328 children younger than 5 survived a traffic accident because of their booster seat, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
