UPDATED: charges pending after I-64 westbound dump truck crash in York County, police say

Updated 11:08 a.m., Aug. 7: All lanes in both directions of Interstate 64 in York County are now open, according to a Virginia State Police news release.

The driver of a 2018 Volkswagen Passat was traveling on Interstate 64 headed westbound at a high rate of speed when he allegedly struck the rear of a 2017 Mack dump truck as it slowed in the right lane, the release said.

The impact caused the dump truck to overturn and lose its load of asphalt, according to the release.

The driver of the sedan, Kenneth Weatherford, 38, was transported to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center by air with major injuries, the release said.

The truck driver, Terence Greene, 28, was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital, according to the release.

Criminal charges are pending, the release said.

Original story: Interstate 64 westbound in York County is blocked due to a major vehicle accident.

The two-vehicle accident between a Volkswagen and a dump truck shut down the Interstate near mile marker 241 just north of the Humelsine Parkway around 2:35 a.m., according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

The road is still closed headed westbound near the Humelsine Parkway, according to Virginia Department of Transportation online traffic reports. Eastbound traffic is at a standstill in the vicinity of the WB crash, according to VDOT, although the road isn't shut down.

The accident occurred when the Volkswagen and the dump truck collided in the median resulting in the dump truck overturning and blocking Interstate 64 westbound, Anaya said.

The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center with major injuries, according to Anaya.

The driver of the dump truck was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital also with major injuries, Anaya said.
