Hicks pleads not guilty

Brian Alexander Hicks, a Northern Virginia man who has been accused of shooting and killing Gabriel Ryan Maness, pleaded not guilty to two charges during an arraignment hearing in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court Monday afternoon.

Hicks has been charged with murder and use of a firearm to commit murder.

Police responded to the Farm Fresh grocery store in Norge shortly after 8 a.m. on April 17 because callers said shots had been fired. According to court documents, Hicks was found standing roughly 5 feet away from Mannes' body with a .45 caliber handgun on the ground in front of him.

During the brief arraignment hearing, Williamsburg-James City Circuit Court Judge R. Bruce Long asked Hicks' highest level of education. Hicks said he has his associates degree and confirmed that he can read and write.

Hicks' case will be heard at a Feb 22 bench trial.
