The Williamsburg-Jamescity County School Board discussed middle school redistricting options and re-elected Kyra Cook (Williamsburg) as it’s chair at Tuesday’s work session.
Cook was re-elected as chair of the W-JCC School Board in a 6-1 vote. The only no vote was from James Beers (Roberts). Lisa Ownby (Powhatan) was elected to the position of vice chair of the School Board, replacing Holly Taylor (Stonehouse). Ownby won with a 6-1 vote, the only no vote coming from Beers.
Also on the agenda was the continued discussion of middle school redistricting. Scott Leopold, a partner with Cooperative Strategies, three new options for redistricting, creating a total six options to review at the meeting. The board decided to only go forward with options two and four.
The main differences between the two redistricting options are option four has a better socioeconomic balance but a worse longevity outlook than option two. Public input on both redistricting options will be taken through an online poll.
The W-JCC School Board must come to final a decision on middle school redistricting at their first work session in February.
The policy committee, headed by Julie Hubble (Williamsburg) and Ownby, was asked to conduct the annual review of standard operating procedures, and present the findings to the School Board during the next meeting.
The next School Board Meeting will be on January 16, in the boardroom of Building F at 101 Mounts Bay Road, Williamsburg.
