Updated: James City police identify man found dead near Richmond Road creek

Updated 3:02 p.m. Friday: The James City County Police Department has identified the body of a man found dead in a wooded creek in the 6600 block of Richmond Road.

The body of Charles Wayne Cooper, 26 of Norfolk, was identified as the deceased person on Friday, according to a James City County Police Department news release.

Cooper was reported as a missing person to James City County police in December, however, police were told he was located safe, the release said.

Only later, police determined that information was false, according to the release.

Originial story: After a body was found on Christmas Eve, James City County police have begun an investigation into the death.

At about 4:30 p.m. Monday, James City County police officers were called to a wooded creek near the 6600 block of Richmond Road in Lightfoot after two dog walkers found a dead body, according to a James City County Police Department news release.

The deceased was taken to the Tidewater branch office of the chief medical examiner, the release stated.

Police have yet to confirm the identity of the body or determine a cause of death, according to the release.

Foul play is not suspected in the death, the release stated. The death remains under investigation.
