Lafayette High School Principal Kimberly Hollemon resigned Thursday afternoon and will not return to Lafayette High School, according to Williamsburg-James City County schools spokeswoman Eileen Cox.
Parents received an email from Superintendent Olwen E. Herron Thursday night; this followed an announcement on Monday that she had been placed on administrative leave, according to Cox.
Former Lafayette assistant principal Daniel Miani has taken over as principal on an interim basis. Miani is the division’s Secondary Math Coordinator.
Herron said the search for a full-time replacement would begin soon and the change in leadership would not affect students at Lafayette.
“I want to assure you that Dr. Miani and the entire Lafayette High School staff remain focused on what is most important – your children,” Herron wrote in the email. “They are committed to delivering high-quality instruction and advancing your child’s academic and personal success.”
The reason for Hollemon’s sudden departure remains unclear.
When asked about the division’s decision to place Hollemon on administrative leave with pay, Cox said that the school division could not comment on an internal personnel matter.
“I know several posts on social media have claimed that Hollemon was escorted from the building by police, but that is unequivocally not true,” Cox said. “Nobody escorted her from the school at that time; she walked to her own car and left.”
Cox said Hollemon was invited to a meeting at the division’s central office, which she attended, but Cox would not elaborate further.
Cox declined to provide any information on whether Hollemon was the subject of an internal investigation or had been subject to an investigatory interview before she was placed on administrative leave. Cox said they were internal personnel matters.
“W-JCC will not comment on personnel matters. We’re handling it internally at this time,” Cox said.
Hollemon had served as principal of Lafayette since last May. She first served as the school’s interim principal in August 2017, after the former principal Anita Swinton, resigned to take a position in W-JCC central office.
