The first week of school is an exciting time of year for most teachers, but Stephen Legawiec, a history teacher at Lafayette High School, got a little extra excitement Sept. 6.
Legawiec was named the Region two 2019 Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Department of Education.
He was given the news by a crowd of people who burst into his classroom in the middle of a lesson. Legawiec said it was a surprise to receive the award on his third day of classes.
“A little crazy for sure,” Legawiec said, laughing.
Earlier this year he was named the Williamsburg-James City County teacher of the year at an awards banquet.
Legawiec has taught for seven years, but joined W-JCC in 2016. According to a news release from the district, outside the classroom, Legawiec is an SOL tutor and Model United Nations coach.
As a regional teacher of the year, Legawiec will be in the running with 7 other teachers for Virginia teacher of the year program. The 2019 Virginia Teacher of the Year will be announced Sept.14, at a celebration in Richmond.
