On Wednesday, Last Word published a comment that said The Williamsburg Inn had been awarded the Forbes Travel Guide Fifth Star. The Inn was awarded the AAA Five Diamond designation in November 2017, one of just 120 hotels in North America to hold this distinction. However, Forbes has not yet announced its ratings, but will do so in February.
Is Comey going to use his leaking of classified memos to the NYT as a case study in ethical or unethical leadership when he teaches at W&M? Will he discuss the ethics of prejudging an investigation, writing the final memo before interviewing the prime suspects? Will he discuss the ethics of him acting as both investigator and prosecutor in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, declining to prosecute while exposing the details of the investigation? Comey has much to teach W&M students, but it isn't as a positive example of ethical leadership.
FBI director Comey’s ethical leadership class being taught at William and Mary this fall should be required for all members of the West Wing and Congress.
James Comey teaching an ethical leadership class for William and Mary? Really?
Comey should be taking a class on ethical leadership instead of teaching a class. Here’s a guy that leaked classified information. What a joke.
I understand that James Comey is going to teach an ethics class at William and Mary. How could he possibly be qualified to teach ethics? I would hope the Board of Visitors would check this out very, very carefully. It’ll be a black eye for the college if he is accepted to teach that course. Thank you.
The front page of the Gazette offered a new oxymoron: Comey/ethical. What is W&M thinking?
If any of the new emails just released on Saturday were true, why would William and Mary allow James Comey to teach an ethics class? Is that what fair ethics is all about — what went on with the Clinton emails and his announcing that when he knew ahead of time they were going to not bring charges? That’s not fair ethics. Give me a break.
First W&M honors Edward Snowden, now it hires James Comey, fired FBI director and admitted felon for "leaking classified government materials to the press" to teach a course on ethics? Maybe W&M, which is now becoming Berkeley East, has an unusual definition of "ethics" that differs from the rest of the world.
I’m calling in on the report about the lack of birds. This is Jan. 19 and I just found my well-stocked bird feeder half empty. This is the first time we’ve had birds here since October. Go figure.
Just when you think W&M students can't be any better, they put on a Sinfonicron show that is incredible. The only- and all-student production, “The Grand Duke,” was one of the best re-written plays, staying in the style of beloved Gilbert and Sullivan but creating a fresh new oh-so-enjoyable production. They gave 150 percnet in every part. Hello, champions! We love you and know that your part of our world will be in excellent hands. Thank you.
This is not the first time politicians have tried to outlast the other side and force them to include items that could wait. It happened while I was working in civil service. Nothing really happened. The world kept spinning and the bills got paid. The problem is the same as it has been since the election. How much longer are we voters going to have to endure the childish behavior of those elected by us to act like they want this country to survive? Or do they want us to self destruct? Your time will come at the next election, but not with Hillary or Oprah. Please get real. Thank you.
Now that Mitch McConnell successfully shut down the U.S. government by refusing to include Democrats in negotiating on any bit of business in Congress, the entire staff of the West Wing, including the president, should be declared nonessential and sent home. The only person who should stay is the Secret Service officer who carries the key to the lock on the front gate.
With the Schumer shutdown of our government, every voter in this country should take note and vote Republican come November. His actions, along with his constituents, show us how much they care about the employees of our government, our military and the children covered under the CHIP Program. We need to vote these people out of office because they are not working for the best interests of the citizens of our country.
Difficult to believe our two U.S. senators chose to support illegal aliens over U.S. military.
Last year the president asked for a "good government shutdown." Well, tonight he got his wish. All because he welched on a promise to Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer. Now Mitch McConnell, oblivious of the truth, has taken the floor of the Senate and laid the blame on the Democrats after he couldn't even get 50 Republican votes. Another example of "alt facts." The Republicans control the White House and both houses of Congress and they cannot keep the government's lights on.
It is such a shame to watch our Congress work on the continuing resolution as they should be doing all the time to get a budget put together rather than just wait for the last minute. I'm disgusted with the Republican Party that has control over the House, the Senate and the Presidency and they couldn't even get enough Republicans to vote on their own bill. Shame on Republicans and this president, who never takes responsibility for anything.
The Schumer government shutdown is the clearest indication that it’s way past time for the Democratic Party to register as foreign agents to remain within compliance with federal requirements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, since they appear to be more engaged in representing Illegal aliens then their legal American citizens who put them in office.
Why did Democrats senselessly shutdown the government to protect illegals when 9 million low-income children needed health care and our servicemen go without pay? While Congress still gets their pay checks for what? If Congress did their job and passed a budget, this mess could be avoided.
Democrats led by Schumer are becoming more desperate for a win, even one as stupid as calling the government shutdown “the Trump shutdown.” Obviously, no one believed Chuck, as it was clearly a Schumer shutdown, which by the way they also lost. Democrats can’t argue with the facts, the economy is doing just great without any help from them, just more wins for the Republican Party. Schumer and Pelosi should go by the way of the extinct Dodo bird.
The state legislature needs to make driving without your headlights on a rainy day a primary violation and make it reckless driving.
Right to Life rally
What a great Right to Life rally. And the president of the United States spoke. What a great rally. Real women treat children with respect. Real women demand that men treat them in a virtuous manner.
Where was the media coverage of the March for Life? Every time I turn on the news, I see coverage of those harridans wearing those raunchy pink hats. They should not refer to that repulsive exhibition as a “women’s” march. It certainly does not represent all women. From the looks of it, it represents only the selfish, immature, vulgar ones. Pretty disgusting.
I have come to the conclusion that football causes too many concussions. They cause some players to suffer physically with permanent damage. The player who causes this should be thrown out of the game.
Looking for …
Does anyone know the status of Chickadees consignment store? I have consigned items there and no one answers the phone. Is the store on Richmond Road closed? Editor’s note: One of our reporters drove to the shop to check things out and a sign on the door confirmed they are closed. However, if you have consignment items there, you can pick them up between 9 a.m. and noon Jan. 27.

Gold pinkie ring lost Dec. 11 around the Williamsburg Post Office on Monticello. The ring has three intertwined gold bands. It means a lot to me. Reward offered. Contact Laura, 757-259-1202.
Does anyone know where to buy or get just a flagpole? We already have a flag, 36x60 inches, and fittings on the house for a pole that can’t be more than three-fourths of an inch. Please respond in the Last Word. Thank you.
Lost: tear-shaped crystal and white gold earring stamped with the name Jason McLeod. Reward. If found, please call 757-869-6937.
In answer to someone looking for Aveda trained stylist in the Jan. 20 Last Word: Posh Salon at 4640 Monticello Ave. in Monticello Marketplace is an Aveda salon with an Aveda-trained stylist. Phone number is 757-253-7674. They have recently expanded. I have been going there for three years and am very happy with them.
Williamsburg Women's March was marketed as "focusing on issues regardless of what party you vote with," yet every single speaker was from the Democratic Party. It should have been billed as a group-think march, where opinions other than ours are not welcome.
It's nice to see the positive coverage of the Lafayette Rams boys basketball team. But where is the coverage of the undefeated LHS boys and girls swim teams? These young and talented teams have a pretty good shot at 4A state titles, and feature at least eight likely college swimming candidates. I've always been impressed with the Gazette's high school sports coverage but would appreciate seeing the Ram's swimmers featured more prominently on the sports pages.
Do you want ISPs to base their service on the cable model? The cable model that forces consumers to subscribe to packages that include "channels" that they will never watch? I cut the cable cord 20 years ago when I was required to pay for a preponderance of sports channels that I would never watch to get a few channels that I do watch. Now the FCC has sanctioned the cable TV business model to continue for ISPs, despite the fact that that model is as dated as buggy whips.
This is in response to the person who is looking for a new knife sharpener, "since Colonial Williamsburg let Casey's Department store go." It was the decision among Casey's management many years ago to close their business, and for their own reasons. CW did not own Casey's and did not manage it. Rather than spend your time blaming Colonial Williamsburg for yet one more bad thing (especially since CW offers many things to area residents for little to no cost), perhaps your energy could be spent on finding a person or business that will gladly sharpen your knives. I wish you well on your journey.
Parking lot lighting
In reference to the individual who noted dim lighting at the parking lot of Dollar General on Richmond Road: That is a private parking lot. You should mention the lighting problem to the store. The individual also noted dim lighting at the intersection of Croaker and Richmond roads as you turn into Food Lion. Croaker Road turns into Pricket Road past the Richmond Road intersection. If the problem is road lighting, you need to contact whoever owns Pricket Road. It could be VDOT, the county or it could be private. The county supervisor for that area can point you in the right direction. If the problem is parking lot lighting, you need to address that with CVS and Food Lion.
Not so funny
I am not sure whether the Jan.20 Fred Siegel cartoon was meant to be a slam at Virginia Tech. However, the least he could do is spell the word “its” correctly. It should be its. No apostrophe needed for the possessive form. Thank you.
Fred Siegel's Jan. 20 cartoon serves shows both his ignorance of Virginia Tech, and The Virginia Gazette's lack of quality as a newspaper.
I am so furious about a man, apparently, who talked about gender equality in Saturday’s Last Word, who said he didn’t see one woman helping to shovel snow out of a driveway. Well, he wasn’t in the right place. I’m 76, and I shoveled so much last year that my car got scraped up because I had to use a shovel on my car. And no, there was no young man or old man except one neighbor that wanted to do anything for me.
After reading the sexist comment in the Last Word regarding gender equality and women who don't shovel snow, I just had to respond. The "gentleman" who stated that he didn't see any women shoveling obviously didn't drive by my house. He would have seen me out shoveling since my husband is too ill to do so. I'm sure there are other women like me, whether they are single women, widows or those of us acting as caregivers, who were out there in the cold doing what a big strong man like him could have been doing for us. I certainly didn't see him driving by and offering to help.
I’m not sure who is the bigger racist: President Trump, for his comment in referring to Africa and Haiti or the Last Word contributor who chastised him because the Norwegians he wants instead wouldn’t want to do the vegetable picking.
To the commenter asking why anyone would want to immigrate to our country: I hope you will make plans ASAP to leave it. That said, Scandinavian countries currently live under an approximately 70 percent income tax rate, that’s why they aren’t world powers. Living in the U.S. allows an individual to choose how his earned money is spent, rather than having the government decide it.
On Jan. 19, I dropped a small wallet outside the Regal Movie Theater. The wallet contained my credit cards. An anonymous person found it and turned it in. Officer Marchand of the James City Police Department did some great detective work, was able to get my cellphone number and called me to tell me it had been found. Thank you goes to the honest people in this world for returning it, and thank you to Officer Marchand for his great detective work.
A big thank you to Leon Richey for delivering the papers during the snowstorm. We always got our papers early, they were always put in our box and he has done a terrific job. This is in the Kingsmill area and we really appreciate his service.
I wish to thank the young man and young lady cashier at Ace Hardware on Route 5. They were a wonderful help to me after the big snowstorm. Also, thanks to the honest person who turned in my blue cane to the New Town Walmart. Honest and caring folks are still with us in the Williamsburg-James City County area.
While I was waiting in line at the Food Lion on Richmond Road, the lady in front of me asked me if that was all I was getting. I had only the one item — chocolate cupcakes I was craving. I told her, yes that was all I was getting. Then she took them and handed them to the cashier, telling her to ring them on her order. I tried to pay her but she insisted on paying for them. I want to thank this sweet lady for her act of kindness and let her know that made my day. And that I will pay it forward.
You would think that with all the technology available, the phone company could develop a program that would verify that the number displayed is the number the call is coming from.
I just discovered the best hairstylist ever. Designs by Jeff, 757-968-1383. On time, no waiting and he listens. We worked together to discuss the style and I’m absolutely thrilled. If you’re looking for a new stylist, give Jeff a try. You won’t be disappointed.
I recently moved and the roof had some problems. It was recommended that I call Streamline Roofing. Sean came right out and he and his people were professional from start to finish. I have a beautiful and excellent new roof. I couldn’t be more pleased. They did an incredible job and came later to give me additional advice about the attic. They have been very responsive and professional. I would recommend them to any of you who need a repair or new roof. They can be contacted at 757-585-0262.
There are two kinds of people in the world: The good Samaritan, who makes time to help people in need, and the Pharisee who never has time. I believe the world would be a better place to live if we had more good Samaritans and less Pharisees.
I have nothing against solar panels. In fact, our son in Arizona, as part of what he did for architecture, was to put tons of solar panels in. But, who decided that you should have solar panels here? California, like Arizona, has sun most of the year. You have cloudless days and zero rain in summer. You don’t have hurricanes in California. Wait until you get all the mud that splashes on solar panels and you have the hurricanes and the cost to fix them.
Not including snow days, our mail has gotten progressively later being delivered. It used to come by 4 p.m. at the latest. Since the beginning of December, it has been anywhere from 6:30-8 p.m.. What time does our carrier start work? Are carriers working 12 hour shifts? What is going on? I subscribe to “Informed Delivery” from the postal service. Each morning I get an email with images of the first class mail that will be delivered that day. The email comes by 8 a.m., so that means the mail has been scanned by then. What is happening?
Up in Washington
I agree that Rob Wittman showed his true beliefs by not standing up to Trump’s comments, but others from Virginia like Scott Taylor and Bob Goodlatte were also silent. With Goodlatte, it is even more of an embarrassment because he was in the meeting when the comments were made. Yes, guys, we know what you stand for and we, the voters, will hold you accountable next November.
The reason 17 women say Trump sexually harassed them is he only thinks in the moment. Now he wants to go to 51 votes in the Senate to pass one spending bill when the consequences for the future is that if the Dems take the Senate next year, they could pass single-payer health care.
Who knew that Trump has such a riotous sense of humor? I got quite a laugh from his tweet attributing the Women’s March to their gratitude for all the good things his reign has done for them.
The dictionary definition of "fake" news is false, incorrect, often intentionally wrong news items. Donald Trump's definition and use of "fake news" is any news that does not favor or support him regardless of its truthfulness. Beware, as this is the stuff of dictators who work to discredit and eventually terminate freedom of speech and the press. Except for Fox, which he considers unbiased, Trump considers virtually all other media outlets to be fake news even though they report facts.
