To the persons who borrowed the 25-foot extension ladder from the Iwo Jima Memorial Park in Williamsburg: Please return it — we need it. We also can pick it up. Call Cliff at 757-229-2566. Thank you.
Northam and company
I don't believe Ralph Northam should have to step down. What he did was not against the law and the only one he hurt with the presumably drunken antics was himself. He has effectively ended his political career after his term expires. But what a laugh — at Virginia's expense — to see who would succeed him should he step down; both Fairfax and Herring are unacceptable. Virginia has to do a better job vetting their government's leaders, and those who would lead must first govern themselves to be worthy.
While we have accepted it as norm; lying, bullying, discrimination, paying off porn star, affairs, verbal disrespect for women's bodies from our 70-plus year old President Trump, I have a hard time holding early 20s Northam responsible for his stupid, disrespectful behavior at an age you’re still forming your values. We should value what he values now. Feels very hypocritical of us.
So our Lt. Gov. is getting Kavanaugh’ed. Who is telling the truth is challenging at best, but it’s obvious in politics that nothing goes unrevenged.
If Gov. Northam is supposed to resign because of something he is alleged to have done in the 80s, why is Maxine Waters not supposed to resign for inciting to riot recently?
I support Gov. Northam. He imitated Michael Jackson on stage. That was a tribute to a great performer. “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery,” so they say. When this is fully investigated, you’ll find this was just a school play. His record since should speak for itself. This has nothing to do with racism.
I am appalled that some submitters to the Last Word would try to give any support to a person that thinks the KKK is humorous or covertly supports that organization by paying homage to them with their image on his senior yearbook page. As an alumnus of EVMS, I will tell you that the senior page in the annual is yours to design. It is to reflect you and what you think is important. Most people have pictures of their family, quotes of their philosophy or hobbies that are important to that person. All I can see from Northam’s page is he likes to drink beer, drive fast cars and party. That image of a KKK member speaks volumes of his character. Even if he thought it was funny or outrageous, the act of making his yearbook page reflect that, at the very least shows extreme poor judgment. I am approximately the same age as Northam, white and a lifelong resident of Virginia and I can tell you that the KKK was never funny or acceptable in polite society. He needs to resign and let Virginia begin to repair its image as a state that is tolerant and good place to live and work.
Gov. Northam has no choice but to fall on his sword and resign from office. When caught in an embarrassing situation such as the photo which surfaced last week, Democrats do the right thing: accept responsibility for their actions and step down. Democrats need to leave standing behind racist behavior to the Republicans and their supporters.
One question for everyone: How long before you are forgiven for doing something really stupid and/or offensive when you were young and ignorant. Is there a different standard if you are public or political figure? Are you forgiven based on your race, religion or social status regardless of what you have done since, or are you never to be forgiven? Are we the people going to let social media — true or false — determine who leads our state and our country?
I have heard next to no comment about the legend below the offensive picture of two knuckleheads holding beer cans. It is a bad drunk joke — as if there is a good one — and one has to wonder if as a medical student, or since, he has had a drinking problem.
NCIS fans will recognize Rule 39: There is no such thing as coincidence. So how is it that the media has failed to make the connection that less than 24 hours after Gov. Northam's viral video about abortions at delivery, magically a new offensively racial photo appears? Coincidence? No. Pro-abortion activists needed a distraction, and fast. So let’s stop talking about a picture taken more than 30 years ago and start talking about the real issue of denying life to babies.
Am I the only person who thinks that Gov. Northam has been framed? To give him the benefit of the doubt, I would say that when he told the yearbook staff that he would not be shelling out money to order a copy, one of them placed that tasteless photo on his page. End of that story. People should lighten up. The country and the world are facing hideous problems, and Northam is not one of them.
Well, now it’s Virginia politicians that have join their brothers in the immoral Democratic Party. What were the chances that the governor and the second and third person in line would all be accused of doing something immoral? Thank God, the fourth person in line to be governor is a Republican.
Regardless that Gov. Northam was a doctor before he became governor and was taking care of people, that was the profession he chose. That does not make him a better person than anyone else. The other thing is, I have a real concern that, he apologized and then he said it wasn’t him. But, on top of that, he said that he had to examine the picture to determine if it was him or not. To me, that sounds more than fishy. That just stinks. I was willing to give him the benefit of doubt, as far as doing something stupid 30-some years ago, but when he turned around and said he had to figure out it that was him or not in the picture, something’s not right there. So he has lost that benefit of the doubt for me.
Does anyone know why the morning Amtrak train that leaves Williamsburg at 9:25 a.m. is being changed? The train will be scheduled to leave Williamsburg at 5:40 a.m. When does this change go into effect?
In the early 1930s, it took one year and 45 days to build the Empire State Building. That’s 13 and a half months, start to finish. It’s taking nearly that long for the Virginia Department of Transportation to redo the intersection of Longhill and Ironbound roads. Great progress?
It is very discouraging to continually wait in a long line along Route 199 at Jamestown Road. Traffic is much heavier on Route 199, but the timing at that intersection does not recognize it. Please, VDOT, upgrade the timing of those lights.
The concept of a traffic circle is not dangerous in itself. The danger comes from the fact that Williamsburg drivers have little or no concept of how they work and certainly have no concept of what a yield sign means.
Regarding the topic of traffic circles or roundabouts: I think it’s important that people first learn the concept of yield and stop. I have seen so many people blow through stop signs and yield signs. We need baby steps. Yield and stop first, then tackle the hard stuff such as roundabouts. Thank you.
A liberal friend of mine is always complaining about the so-called “rich,” but when I asked him wouldn’t he want to be rich, he stated, “Of course, I would!” Well, what it comes down to is just pure jealousy. Then there is “the rich should pay their fair share” and who is to determine what’s fair? The rich use the least government services and receive no government entitlements, so why should they pay more taxes?

Longhill Road work
Readers who voice opinions on the Longhill Road widening project should check their facts beforehand. According to the VDOT website, there is no roundabout proposed for the Longhill-Olde Towne roads intersection. There is a new roundabout proposed for the Williamsburg Plantation and King of Glory Lutheran Church exits. This will improve traffic flow and driver safety.
Farm Fresh visit
To the persons who miss our Farm Fresh on Merrimac Trail: I go to the one in Norge at least two times a month. I am up that way anyway getting my birdseed at Jamestown Feed and Seed and just can't resist their deli. Their personnel are always friendly and helpful and deserving of customer support.
I have had a terrifying experience with three feral cats in my crawl space. I first thought it was a heating problem and called a contractor. I paid $80 and nothing was wrong, but they discovered the cats. I finally got a contractor to come out after I had been threatened by animal control that if I took matters in my own hands, I would be arrested for animal cruelty. After the cats left, the contractor found $500 in damage in my crawl space. One cat was caught in a trap but because it was identified and the owner said the shots were up to date, it was released into the cold. Who is guilty of animal cruelty? I understand the City of Williamsburg has a law about cats but James City County does not. I wrote the Board of Supervisors with no response. I am a senior citizen on a fixed income and cannot afford this for someone else's neglect or to be called a criminal for trying to protect my home. What is the solution for this?
We live in a new condo community and have a wonderful regular mailman. On Saturday we had a substitute. We had 11 pieces of mail in our box which were addressed clearly to someone with a different last name and address in a different condo community altogether. A large box was left at our neighbor’s porch and was someone else’s in the other community. When our regular mailman came back, he was confronted with so much mail misdelivered here and belonging to the other community that it filled two large tubs. Our community is not completely developed, so there are banks of blank mailboxes. This guy had put mail in those where nobody even lives. I felt so sorry for our regular mailman.
Looking for …
Two gold rings lost in the Atir and MassageLuXe parking lot on Monday, next to Fresh Market. One ring has three round diamonds. It’s very old — it was my grandmother’s. The other ring has three baguettes going east/west. Please call me, 812-0052. Reward. Thank you.
Looking for passports stolen in the parking lot at St. Bede Catholic Church at about 9 a.m. Dec. 31, 2018. Please call 757-897-4580.
Tamales are available at La Tolteca on Second Street in Williamsburg. They serve all sorts of delicious, homemade Mexican food. My husband and I eat there often. We have never had a bad meal. The service is great, and the price is very affordable.
Looking for tamales? Look no further. La Terrazza on Richmond Road. It has the best tamales in this part of the country. You can make your own combo with either two or three items and choose either chicken or beef. It is served with rice and beans.
I’m puzzled by Velocity replacing Sentara Urgent Care and taking over local physical therapy offices. Who is Velocity? Can someone please explain? Is this a change of ownership? Is there a change of employees/procedures, record sharing? We have received no notice/explanation from Sentara Urgent Care -- just mailings announcing Velocity.
Help! Part of my toilet-cleaning brush broke off right as I was flushing the toilet while cleaning it and the brush got stuck in the pipes. Our regular plumber removed the toilet and still could not get to the brush. He thinks the ceiling might need to be cut out to get to the pipe. Does anyone have a recommendation for who to call about this kind of work? Thank you.
I’m a senior citizen, and I would greatly appreciate information on whether there’s going to be someone at Bruton High to help seniors with their tax preparations. And would they please print the date and the time, since I am very interested in this? Thank you.
About a month ago, a group wrote that they were collecting empty pill containers that are used to dispense pharmaceuticals. I lost the group’s name and contact information and have been saving some that they could probably use. Could someone please resend the information? Editor’s note: ‘The Group’ at Parker View Senior Apartments collects empty pill containers. You can drop them off at the manager’s office, 100 Parker View Court.
I was just calling to say that I was reading about tax help in the Last Word, and it says AARP provides tax help for those 60 and older. Actually, AARP provides tax help to anyone who comes in the door, except for active duty military — they can go to any military installation. Thanks. Editor’s note: Thanks for clearing that up.
For the person inquiring about the local chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America: The Williamsburg Rose and Thistle Chapter meets the second Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon at the King of Glory Lutheran Church (Room 313) at 4897 Longhill Road. We also have informal stitching sessions several other times a month. All are welcome, and we would love to see you at any of our meetings. Call 202- 200-1369 if you have any questions. Thank you.
While the beggar who works the intersection of Monticello Avenue at Settlers’ Market is in his Florida condo for the winter, it’s time for the authorities to lay Jersey curb down the middle of the median so it’s inconvenient for him to stand and beg at the stoplight.
Shutdown / wall
As a taxpayer, I’m mad that we are paying federal workers back pay for days, not work, due to the shutdown. I know this may create a lot of discussion, but I was a union worker before I retired and every time there was a strike, I did not get back pay. So why do the feds say this is owed to them? Also, if I was a TSA worker or any of the federal workers that worked during the shutdown, I would also believe this was an unfair miscarriage or pain/injustice.
Congressional legislators who oppose extending physical barriers at our southern border are being extremely disrespectful of those men and women who work hard to protect that border and who tell us the barriers are necessary. In effect, the legislators are saying that the law enforcement personnel do not know what they are talking about. Shame!
Regardless of your party affiliation, all Virginia voters should tell their U.S. senators and congressional representatives and President Trump that before allowing the government to be shut down again, a bill needs to be passed that stops the pay of the Congress and president. They should not be paid like all other employees who don’t get paid during a shutdown. We need a bill passed now. Are you willing to do this? Tell them no bill, no votes.
Vice President Pence came to Virginia to face our military. And he came here, looking these people in the eye. People were not working. People were not receiving money in paychecks because of him and Trump. How do you look at a man that can’t put food on a table for his family and shake his hand? How do you do that? Thank you.
How many of you remember President Reagan saying, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall"? Well, what do you know, we are now turning into a state much like Eastern Germany during the Cold War by building a wall. How long will it be before our president does not allow U.S. citizens to pass through this militarized wall now with thousands of troops overlooking it like Communist East Germany? Wake up, America.
It's amusing to read all the comments about the "manufactured border crisis" -- manufactured by none other than President Trump. How quickly they forget the "border crisis" in 2014 when President Obama was addressing it. And they called it exactly that, a "border crisis." In fact, it's been labeled a crisis by every administration since President Reagan. But because it's Trump, and he's actually doing something, it has to be opposed. The left only cares about being able to say President Trump did not build a wall, national security be damned.
Jason the Mason worked on my front steps. He did a great job matching the brick. He also extended the landing out further, and I would recommend to anyone. He does excellent work.
If you are in search of a quality housekeeper, I recommend Claire Harbour. Her attention to detail is amazing and she is totally trustworthy. She has worked for us for several years and has not only cleaned, but also beautifully reupholstered a chair and ottoman. She can be reached at 757-945-6211.
I recently had to have a portion of my cement driveway repaved due to a large pine root that buckled a portion of it. ABBA Concrete, a local family-owned company, did a splendid job removing the root and repairing my driveway. Their crew was professional and courteous, and the work they did was excellent for a reasonable price. I highly recommend them. Their phone number is 757-221-8118.
This Democrat has had enough. As an Irish Catholic Democrat, I stuck with the party. Now I am disgusted with Bill taking advantage of an intern, shocked with Obama spending eight years in office, compiling the worst U.S. GDP since the Depression and telling me it’s the new administration.
To the person calling the disabled person “lazy” because they don’t return the cart to the corral or the store: I actually appreciate having that cart there because I can lean on it and use it when I need it to walk into the store. And, if I’m disabled and having issues that day with pain in walking, that means it’s more difficult for me to take it to the corral or back to the store and then walk back to my car. Be careful about what you label “lazy.” How about “disabled”? Maybe that person is having an extra hard time that day and that’s all they can do.
In response to the Rev. Betty Hudson’s editorial concerning churches as sanctuaries, I agree with the stated issues about Christians showing real compassion and care for those less fortunate. I take issue with her application of those principles to illegal immigrants. I wonder how much her church does for our own citizens in need, or to what extent they send missionaries and funds to countries where the problems occur. The constant justification I hear from activists is that these “illegal immigrants haven’t done anything wrong.” It reminds me of how in Genesis, Satan spoke to Eve by saying “Did God say” and then go on to twist what God had said. What part of the word “illegal” don’t these people understand? We put our citizens in prison when they break a law. Contrary to her claim that our officials lack compassion and courage to implement reasonable immigration policies, she just chooses to ignore the laws that do exist and were thought out to manage immigration issues. Claiming it doesn’t get addressed doesn’t make it so.
What an incredible performance of “Anne Frank’s Diary” at the Library. Opera In Williamsburg founder Naama Zahavi-Ely arranged for the remarkable and unforgettable staging of “The Diary,” with funding from our Community Foundation. Watching the heart-wrenching films and photos from the Nazi era, hearing the poignant words the composer took from the diary, sung so wonderfully by Israeli singer Ayelet Cohen — the entire piece was breathtaking. The accompanist, Johanna Kramer, couldn’t have been a more powerful companion to words and music. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this story to us. It ought to be on tour all over the world.
Up in Washington
Democrats want to destroy corporations. Well, who do you think owns stock in American corporations and are the employees of American corporations? Americans. Once again, we see the Democratic Party is turning into the Socialist Party; this should scare all Americans.
When the White House lists the president's schedule as "unstructured executive time," it means (A) he is playing golf, (B) he is in his tanning bed, (C) he is watching television and publishing a Twitter storm, (D) he is talking to undisclosed people on an open phone or (E) all of the above. If the report that he is working for a dollar a year is true, then the American people can be assured that we are not getting full value for our money.
Democrats really believe Donald Trump is causing the immigration problem. Let’s review this: Chuck Schumer has been in office since 1981. Nancy Pelosi has been in office since 1987. Together, they have a combined number of 70 years of experience, and they have not solved the immigration problem. Donald Trump has tried, and he has only been there for 24 months. Just think about that.
