Last Word on Carter's Grove land, Feb. 13

HRSD project

Hard to believe that HRSD needs 7 acres to expand, but wants to take 76 acres from Carter's Grove, a historic colonial plantation. If that wasn't enough, HRSD is planning to take sewage, treat it to drinkable standard, then inject it underground into the Potomac aquifer. The Potomac aquifer is under many states along the East Coast. That could be water pollution on a huge scale. Will Williamsburg-JCC be liable if HRSD is sued?

With all the undeveloped land around here, the Hampton Roads sanitation project wants to take a huge chunk of Carter’s Grove land? After all the effort to keep that beautiful historic parcel intact, now safely in private ownership. For heaven’s sake, find another parcel with a willing seller. Editor's note: the land HRSD says it needs is adjacent to their treatment plant.

Looking for …

Do you or your organization collect Box Tops for Education and don't know where to drop them off? The James Blair Middle School PTSA is collecting them to raise funds for the school. Box tops can be dropped off at the front office, sent to the school with a James Blair student or mailed to the school at 101 Longhill Road, 23185. All donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am looking for an experienced audio visual individual to help me set up a program to organize the photos on my cellphone and computer. Please call 757-879-3809.

To the person inquiring about Jennifer Dean, MD: I was treated by Dr. Dean in January at the Hampton Roads Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Urgent Care, located at 730 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Newport News. The phone number is 757-223-5700. I never experienced treatment by her at Velocity. I was very impressed by my exam at HROSM Urgent Care.

Over in Richmond

That’s Northam’s answer, that he’s going to make his governorship about racial equality? Well, you sure didn’t say that when you were running for office, and you sure didn’t say that when you were lieutenant governor and you sure didn’t say that when you were 25 years old. You weren’t 12 or 8. And I’m supposed to buy this? That you’re now going to be the champion? Give me a break! How stupid does Northam think we are? Resign.

As a relatively new U.S. citizen, I find these state politics most disturbing and undemocratic. If the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general all resign, then we shall finish up with a GOP-led state administration. Is this what all the people who voted for the governor really want? Those citizens who think the governor should resign should perhaps think again.

I’m calling about the talk of impeaching the black lieutenant governor of Virginia. Two women have come forward. I want to say two women came forward with our president. I may be wrong, but nobody’s talking about impeaching him — and the way he talked about women. I really don’t understand, but again, I forgot Mr. Trump is above the law. Thank you.

The silence of Virginia Democrats over the alleged sexual crimes of our Virginia lieutenant governor is deafening, racist and baldly two-faced.

Is there a "stupid virus" infecting the Richmond Capitol? On top of everything else, the RTD reports that Republican state Sen. Ben Chafin has not recused himself from serving on the panel interviewing candidates for the Virginia Supreme Court, one of whom is his sister. Even worse, the state senator he replaced, Democrat Phil Puckett, resigned largely because of his daughter’s judgeship. And to top it off: "When asked if he considered whether it was appropriate for Ben Chafin to be participating in the interviews, Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Rockingham, the chairman of the committee, waved his hand at a reporter and turned away." Does no one there — of either party —understand the concepts of conflict of interest or irony? And does Chafin not see the shadow this ultimately casts over his sister's pursuit of the appointment? Unbelievable!

Seriously, first Northam admits that was him in blackface; now he’s saying it wasn’t him. Does he really think anyone will believe anything he has to say? Just another example of Democrats falsely stating they care about African Americans.

How much more does our state have to endure with this Democratic governor? Not only has he personally endorsed infanticide, but is now evidenced as a racist. In addition, we have a lieutenant governor who is being investigated for sexual harassment. Our state has become a laughing stock throughout the country and, thanks to the leadership of the state’s Democratic Party, a true swamp! Please, for heaven’s sake, have the decency to resign so we can get honorable leadership.

It’s utterly ridiculous! All these people up there in our capitol — our lieutenant governor, our governor — they can do whatever they want and they’re not punished. This is ridiculous. They know they’re guilty. They should step down.

To the person that thinks they shouldn’t hold poor, early 20s Northam responsible for a stupid, disrespectful behavior at an age he was still forming his values: Shame on you. He should have had his values by then. That’s the problem with the world today — that you’re so readily to dismiss those that you think are on your side. You know, how many things have you done? Probably quite a few, and they were disrespectful and you probably were an adult, just as Northam is an adult and was an adult at the time. Northam’s problem is that he admitted it, he denied it and then he said he couldn’t identify himself. He didn’t know if it was him. So, that says a lot about who he is today as well.

Regarding Gov. Northam: Can anybody definitively tell me if he was the man in blackface or the man under the hood? Either way, I don’t see any evidence of proving it was exactly his face. If anybody should resign, it should be Donald Trump. He didn’t have blackface or a hood on his head, but he certainly has a racist attitude towards, you know, black people and proponents of Klan involvement in Charlottesville. So you can point the finger wherever you want.

Over at James Blair

It was heart wrenching to read of children starting in the new James Blair school only to be bullied immediately and to not have the principal and staff pay attention nor, apparently, to have a positive welcome message for all incoming students. Will the students be able to forget and start over? Was their experience so traumatic that Blair is forever a tainted memory? Middle school is tough enough without aggressive bullies and oblivious adults. Let’s hope the final changes will make the needed difference.

DUI arrests

Really, someone is opposed to our men in blue sitting outside establishments that serve liquor? Hopefully it won’t take a drunk driver to injure or take your life or those you love for you to understand why.

Road worries

In light of how many retirees live in our area, I think the local AAA office ought to start holding those special classes for senior drivers.

To the black Jeep honking behind me at the intersection of Jamestown Road and Route 199: You could not see there was a constant stream of traffic approaching. If I had turned right on red, as you were impatiently commanding me to do, I would be in the morgue right now. Your honking did not intimidate me; I knew that I was driving safely and you were the one driving recklessly. Be more patient in the future.

Another bad accident at this intersection of Route 5 and Centerville Road Saturday afternoon, but hey, Virginia Department of Transportation, let’s have another meeting to talk about it like a couple of weeks ago. And why can’t JCC police put up a roadblock or barricade to prevent motorists from turning onto Centerville from Monticello and not knowing of that accident until it’s too late? Just a thought.

Great performance

I had the opportunity to see “Anne Frank's Diary” at the Williamsburg Library. What a fantastic production. The singer, Ayelet Cohen, was from Israel. She had a wonderful voice and put her heart and soul into the performance. One could definitely imagine her as a young girl alone with her diary and her thoughts in the midst of World War 2. The production put a very real face on the tragedy and loss from the time of the Holocaust. The pianist, Johanna Kvam, did an excellent job conveying the feeling of the production and tackling some very difficult music. Many thanks to Opera in Williamsburg for bringing this fine performance to town.

Here's an idea

I’d love for our school shop and art classes to create sturdy, attractive “idea boxes” that could be placed throughout schools so students, faculty and parents could feel comfortable giving their suggestions, comments and concerns in writing. A small committee of class officers and a staff member could review the letters weekly and propose appropriate action. Problems and proposals could be quickly acknowledged and acted on, or delegated to departments or people who could look into ideas for solutions. Problems wouldn’t have to fester.

Settling accounts

The bean counters strike again. I overpaid my orthopedic surgeon last year for a visit. They spent 50-cents postage to mail me a check for 18 cents. It will cost me more to cash it than it’s worth.

Train schedules

In response to the caller who asked the question about the change in the Amtrak schedule: It’s very simple. The president of Amtrak, who came from the airlines industry, is determined to make train traffic and travel across this country by rail just as unpleasant as traveling by air is.

Has anyone from Williamsburg considered how the change in the Amtrak schedule might affect parking at the train station? With an early morning departure, fewer people will be dropped off and more will be driving and parking their cars. Can more parking spaces be added?

Heads up!

The charity, Kids Wish Network, is a scam. They have lawyers and tax accountants to just stay inside the law. Go to Wikipedia for the facts. Charity Navigator gave them zero efficiency rating based on dollars spent on fundraising compared to charitable activities. American Institute of Philanthropy gave them an “F.” CNN’s program, “America’s Worst Charities,” stated that only 3 cents of every dollar was spent on granting wishes. Report this to your congressman. And do not make a donation to them.

Border wall

In Saturday’s Gazette, a writer tried to tie the proposed wall (barrier) to the Berlin Wall. Bad comparison. I would remind the writer that the Berlin Wall was designed to keep its citizens in; our barrier is designed to keep illegals out. Citizens can go and come as they will.

Scam call

The James City Police had put a notice in the paper at one time that if you got a suspicious call that apparently came from them, to report it. Well, I got a call on Feb. 8 at 4:35 p.m., and the number was 259-5166, James City Police. And I almost didn’t answer it because I thought, “Well, I don’t think the police will be calling me,” but then I answered it and, of course, it was a scam and someone starts going on about credit card, blah blah blah, you might need this. I just hung up.

Well done

I would like to thank the folks at Shirley Construction for doing an excellent job on Interstate 64, from Fort Eustis all the way to Williamsburg. The first portion they’ve completed on time, on budget and on schedule, and it looks as if they’re going to complete the second leg on time, on schedule and on budget. They’ve done an excellent job of keeping the traffic moving — two lanes, mostly — all the time, both ways. Thank you go out to those workers who’ve really done an excellent job. Thank you.

I left my cell phone at Earth Fare grocery, and I didn’t miss it until 9 p.m. Thank you to the honest person who turned it in and to Ryan for securing it in your safe. I really appreciate living in Williamsburg.

Brainwashing

The art of brainwashing has been practiced for thousands of years. People need to watch out for others who tell you a falsehood in order to get your money. These people are dishonest and are not concerned about your welfare. I believe these people are doomed unless they change the way they live.

Happy shopper

Since the remodel, the John Tyler Food Lion has been my favorite place to shop. The aisles are wide, shelves kept fully stocked and the employees are helpful. When it’s time to check out, there are enough cashiers so I never have to wait, even at 5 p.m. There are a number of young men cashiers and they are friendly and expedient. Thank you, Food Lion!

White House visit

The Patriots’ non-visit to the White House: the NFL champions have decided they’re not going to take up the invitation to visit the White House and the president of these United States. Well, all I’ve got to say to them is, one day down the road you’re going to be extremely sorry you did such a thing. How often do we, as citizens of this country, get an invitation to visit our White House and our president? I hope it’s not too long before you find out you made a big, big mistake. Thank you.
