DoG Street paving
I read in The Virginia Gazette that Duke of Gloucester Street will be repaved, but first they will have to go down to the cobblestone. When they reach the cobblestone, why not just stop there and leave it. I'm sure in colonial days they did not have asphalt.
Let me understand this: For years people have asked the Virginia Department of Transportation to do something about congestion on Longhill Road. Now that VDOT finally agreed improvements are necessary, you expected the road to be widened without removing trees? I'm for saving trees when possible, but you can't have both. Stop complaining about the traffic or give up the trees.
Does anyone know why the camera at the intersection of Route 199 and Jamestown Road was put up on Feb. 15?
It’s a mess
Please look around at the shoulders and median of our highways and byways next time you are out and about. I haven't seen so much litter since I was a young child. What is going on here? Have people gone back to just casually throwing trash from their cars or do people place items on top of their cars and in the bed of their truck and forget them? I don’t think this can account for all this litter. I suspect it might have something to do with the way our trash is collected. It is common to see waste management drop trash while emptying the containers. If this is the case, what needs to be done to correct this problem? Should we do a better job bagging our trash or should WM and the drivers be held responsible? What do you think is the best way to handle litter as a community? We all deserve better.
Many people have been protesting tearing little babies from their mother's arms. Why are so few protesting tearing little babies from their mother's wombs?
Many people will likely be upset reading that Amazon paid no federal income taxes for the second year in a row. Unfortunately, their anger is likely to be misdirected at Amazon. The only legitimate reason for being upset with them is if they were doing this illegally. No one should expect any company, or persons, to voluntarily pay more taxes than they are required to by law. If you are upset tell your Congress person, they establish the federal tax laws, which include the loopholes.
A purchase from eBay arrived in Sandston 2 days after leaving Las Vegas. Ten days later, the USPS tracking website still says "in route to next destination." Typical service. If the president wanted to call a real national emergency, he could call one for the USPS.
Before anymore of Williamsburg’s own "nattering nabobs of negativism” complain about their mail being too late in the day, or whatever; they should read “How the Post Office Created America” by Winifred Gallagher. I happened to stumble onto this during an Amazon search and from the reviews thought it would be interesting. Wow, I have a lot more respect for the postal system and its contributions to this country; all the way from our very beginnings.
What a sad day it will be when the JCC Board of Supervisors hears and votes on an amended plan from an out-of-state developer and doesn’t give voters a chance to review those amended plans before they render their vote, or even run the changes by staff to vet the information. Their reason is because the county attorney says they can, by code. Elections will be interesting in the years to come. We will not forget!
I thought the commenter on Saturday was going to have a meaningful recommendation to HRSD for public safety, but low and behold, it just a self centered concern for “my” well. More and more nowadays we see it is all about me.
Over in Richmond
For the person responding to the Feb. 9 Last Word coverage on the state’s political upheaval, it is clear you have an agenda against white males, two of which are caught up in the Democratic mess. Let’s try to judge people on their accomplishments and not their race or sex.
Interesting to read all the comments about why we shouldn’t blame Northman and others for what they did so many years ago. I guess that didn’t apply to Justice Kavanagh during his hearings. It becomes very obvious that Democrats only are willing to forgive their own and just how bias they are.
Lt. Gov. Fairfax has stated that the two women’s accusation of sexual assaults should be investigated. So, our question is who will do this and when? The FBI is normally responsible for national-level investigations. Who does the state-level investigations? When will the Governor, Attorney General or General Assembly announce who and when will these investigations begin? You should ask your Senator and Delegate.
Looking for …
I have been thinking about cutting about 13 inches off my hair. Is there a place to sell it around here? Just curious.
Has anyone had experience with the Lemon Law? What were your resources and outcome?
I also need information about my stamp collection. If the individual who responded they could put us in contact with the appropriate expert could phone me I would greatly appreciate it. My phone number is 757-258-1486. Thank you!
Sales tax money
With the windfall of extra monies for the whole of Virginia, why hasn't there been a movement to retract the "Tommy Tax" for this area? By the way, what revenues have been generated by this tax? Shouldn't there be a public accounting? If last figures for the use of this tax are correct, a quarter million dollars for administration and third of a million dollars for a nondescript program name have been spent. Wouldn't those monies have been better used hiring more people to be local ambassadors at CW? Sending the Fife and Drum group traveling?

Thank you to Lexi Solomon for her very thought provoking commentary, “Americans’ Glass house is cracked; it’s time to repair it”, and to the Gazette for printing it. Also, thank you for including the well written letter by Wayne Moyer, “This is Virginia’s ‘teachable moment’.” It is extremely refreshing to have some positive input on an otherwise disturbing and controversial situation.
I am thrilled that the president is planning to declare a national emergency on the southern border. The next president can use this as an example and declare a national emergency over gun violence and attempt to get a handle on the uncontrolled slaughter of American citizens.
One of the best reasons for a lawsuit over the president's fake national emergency would be one for a breach of promise, because for two years he repeatedly promised the American people that Mexico would pay for the wall.
Panhandling, sort of
Sometimes I can't resist pointing out a phrase that I find funny, all in good humor of course. I'm 68 years old and I've lived in the Trenton, New Jersey, area my entire life. I've never heard the term "Jersey curbs" before. What we do have on a lot of highways are median strips, which are concrete strips of various heights that divide the highway. They are called median strips because they're in the middle of the road. Asking for something to be installed in the middle of the median sounds like the request came from the Department of Redundancy Department.
The reader who expressed dissatisfaction concerning a medical refund check should, perhaps, consider the possibility that the specific inefficiency that s/he identified might be offset by the overall efficiency of the refund system as a whole. Those bean counters might be smarter than s/he thinks.
After waiting in line for 25 minutes at the DMV with all the documentation I thought was required to renew a Virginia driver’s license, including my current driver’s license, birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of residence with current bills, a military ID and a passport, I was asked, "Where is your marriage license?" This was the first time in 50 years of marriage that I was asked to show my marriage license. I really thought she was joking. Not so! And, of course, a document from a church isn’t enough; it has to be the official state license. So a word to the wise: be sure you have a marriage license when renewing a Virginia driver’s license. What a joke! I suppose it’s not required of the spouse since he had no name change with marriage. A bit sexist if you ask me. Why is this required?
Being “quick to judge” along with building and then quickly tearing down our “idols” has replaced baseball as the national pastime. How much fun is it to watch celebrities and presidential candidates, quick to blame “attack” on Jussie Smollett on the racial and homophobic atmosphere fostered by the president, now running as fast as they can from the story. Isn’t filing a false police report a crime?
Reply to the commenter that government employees should save for a shutdown. Upon reading your comment it makes me wonder: What world do you live in? With mortgage and rental costs today, and utility bills, along with other basic bills including high medical bills, many persons live paycheck to paycheck with no way to have extra money to save. Many also live on credit cards just to meet basic bills. Maybe you should live in the real world today.
Hold the hot dog
In the past, concessions at Plumeri Park have been very fan-friendly and family-friendly. Not any more. I doubt whether families with several children will want to pay the $4.50 for a hot dog (up from $3 in past years). Other items have seen similar price increases. I didn't see any peanuts or Cracker Jack, both ballpark staples. As a note, I did not see too many fans in the stands at Friday night's game munching on hot dogs or other concession items.
Ah, to be rich
No one is saying we should do away with all services, as was alluded to by one commenter, the point being why should the so call “rich” pay more than anyone else for those same services and many they don’t use. I think people need to understand the difference between the words “get paid” more and “earn” more. People who work hard earn their money, and shouldn’t be penalized for doing so.
The statement, “capitalism failed miserably in Venezuela,” is incorrect, as that country has been Socialist since Hugo Chavez, 1999-2013, and now Maduro, since 2013, have been in power. The Venezuelan people have now recognized that socialism doesn’t work and want a better life for themselves. We pray that the U.S. and other supportive governments will help the Venezuelan people return to a democratic form of government soon. The people are starving and more than 3 million of them have left the country.
We’ve learned that our JCC taxes support our JCC firefighters, paramedics and they are not soliciting donations to pay salaries. Mailed solicitations comes from a statewide union and supports statewide issues.
Almost 40,000 people were killed in the United States by guns in 2018; I do not fear people coming across our borders, but I might fear going to the mall.
We are a country made up of immigrants but they all worked because there was no government help, and they all spoke English out of the home. Everywhere you go now someone will speak Spanish, so these people don’t have to learn the language. Anywhere you call, even government offices, you have to choose which language.
How can a product be both "new" and "improved"? The idea of "new" is a product that never existed before. "Improved" implies that the manufacturer took an existing product and made it better.
Andrew has been carving roast prime rib at The Quarterpath Harris Teeter every Thursday from the beginning. He connects with customers making his smile just one more nice thing about this fabulous deal. Maegan helping self check-out is so efficient and makes the second step of the experience a very pleasant one. Highly recommend!

Not another run
Someone needs to tell Bernie Sanders that his time has passed and it’s time for him to sit on the porch and rock away this election cycle.
