My wife, with her bachelor of science degree in business, works in the field and is paid $25 an hour. My son, who attended Virginia Tech, works in new construction and after 10 years makes $27 an hour. I received a flyer in my mailbox today from a couple of enterprising teens — bravo for the initiative — starting a dog walking business for the summer. Their rates are $20 for 30 mins and $30 for an hour per dog. I tossed it before any of the current College of William and Mary grads saw it and changed career plans. I know the $1 lemonade stands may be dated, but some reality of education and skill set needs to be imparted to the upcoming citizens who will run our economy. I wonder what the JCC teacher rate for a part-time substitute teacher is?
Two weeks ago, there was a go kart speeding up and down the streets in Fieldcrest and Deer Run, darting around parked cars and landscaping trucks. This morning there was a dirt bike motorcycle on Colonial Bike Trail/Greenspring Trail/Powhatan Creek Trail and around the wheat fields. I guess school is out and kids are bored already, but go karts have no place on public roads, and motorcycles absolutely should not be on the trails.
I am always amazed at the selfishness of people. I’m reading the comment about buses parked down at Walmart and someone asking why does WATA block traffic with three to four buses daily. Aren’t you blessed that you have a vehicle and you don’t have to take a bus. The buses are there because, obviously, people need them to get to and from where they need to go. And here you are, blessed to sit in your car that is probably air conditioned, and you can’t be bothered by going a different route in the parking lot to get where you want.
My husband and I went down to Williamsburg Live to listen to EmmyLou Harris Saturday and thought we’d catch some dinner from one of the food trucks. We were delighted to find FoodaTude was serving up Better Than Beef burgers and avocado tacos for those of us who choose not to eat meat. What a surprise — and a treat. Thank you, Jim Kennedy, and your hard-working crew for helping make it a great night, start to finish.
The absolute most inefficient office in James City County is the treasurer’s office. It is months behind in sending out notices of delinquency, yet they place holds on accounts for $4 -- yes, $4. They have invoices for personal taxes you can’t access because their system doesn’t work; I received wrong tax bills twice. We were late getting tax bills sent to us, had business license problems, assessed late fees that aren’t warranted. They just don’t know much of anything in each office, and you must be transferred to multiple people, and still no one can really help. The sorry thing is that no one is running for this office or the many others, and we are stuck with these folks in the constitutional offices. When is enough, enough?
Just received notice that James City County will start charging for recycling. In view of this, I will stop recycling all together. Nice job James City.
Not so friendly
The EU is lecturing us and supporting students doing protests on global warming and how horrible it is that people are polluting. While the EU is lecturing us and taking the supposed high road, they’re dumping all their computers, telephones and televisions in Ghana. I was watching the news from Ghana. It’s a huge dumping ground, and they have to burn this stuff because it doesn’t break down. So they’re burning it like crazy, and the Ghana people are saying, “Stop! We don’t want any more of your garbage.” And they keep bringing it over because they don’t want it to show up on their land. And yet, it’s all their junk.
During this upcoming General Assembly special session on guns, could we actually have an investigation set on Lt. Gov. Fairfax’s sexual confrontations — the ladies had against him? Let’s get that behind us. What a black eye we’re carrying around now, and it won’t change.
I just got a phone call that’s a scam from my “granddaughter in New York” who got in an accident and got arrested. I was supposed to call an 800 number for a Legal Aid Society, and they wanted me to send $3,200, which I’m not going to do. They gave me an address in the Bronx. I don’t have a granddaughter, let alone one in New York. However, this is a total scam and I’m not about to send $3,200 to someone I don’t have. Thank you — and beware.

Does anyone know of anyone who stretches carpets for a reasonable price. Please call 757-564-5944. Thank you!
President Trump awarded Arthur Laffer the Medal of Freedom in recognition of his creation of supply-side economics, as characterized by his Laffer Curve. What did he do for America? Instead of lowering the budget deficit with the supply-side tax cuts, the deficits tripled under President Reagan. President Trump repeated the error with his budget-busting tax cuts. If we grade Laffer on the curve, he gets an “F,” and that doesn’t stand for freedom.
The reason the price of crab cakes is so high isn’t a lack of crabs in the Chesapeake Bay. Three crab processing plants on the Eastern Shore had to close down because of a lack of immigrant pickers due to restrictions for legal immigration and work visas.
President Trump wants Mexico to stop immigrants at its Guatemala border, while he does not know how to do the same at our border. He is imposing a burdensome tariff on Americans to accomplish what he knows is impossible. Furthermore, he wants Mexico enter into a “safe third-country agreement” that would make it difficult for those who enter Mexico to claim asylum in the U.S. This sounds like the critic of sanctuary cities wants Mexico to be a “sanctuary country.”
What a breath of fresh air instead of hot air in the letter to the editor on June 22. The truth of what is occurring in Guatemala and Central America in general is exposed, and no longer can Americans remain ignorant. To exacerbate the grinding poverty, farms remain unproductive and harvest poor under drought conditions. And America turns a blind eye, saying "there is no room at the inn."
A recent commenter was wondering where the tax-and-spend Democrats were going to get the money for their outlandish schemes such as reasonable health care for all and infrastructure rehabilitation. I suggest this short-sighted person look no further than those benefiting from the recent tax cut given to the rich and corporations. Does he realize that many corporations pay little to no taxes, as do the top 1%?
I never thought I would say this, but former VP Joe Biden was right: In Congress you deal with people you do not like in order to get things done. It is that way in government in general and in business as well. It may well also be that way in academia. It does not seem to be appreciated yet by some of his vocal challengers, which would seem to limit their own ability to govern. There are many things he has done for which he should be/was challenged, but this was not one of them.
To the person who compares current socialism with former, so-called "communist countries": Those weren't communist governments. They were authoritarian dictatorships that just called themselves communist. Just like "The Democratic People's Republic of Korea" is what North Korea calls itself, but it's an authoritarian dictatorship, not a democracy. Also communism and socialism are not at all the same thing. We are already somewhat socialist. U.S. socialist policies are: police, jails and prisons, fire and rescue, roads and bridges, disability and unemployment insurance and federal disaster aid, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and even the military. The list goes on and on. You need to educate yourself on the types of government and what programs come from what kind. Thank you.
I can't believe that Mark Herring is trying to decriminalize marijuana. I have seen some really good workers come in high on marijuana and it was like working with a zombie and didn't even make sense when they would speak. I was told he could get to Richmond in 15 minutes. It really messes people’s minds.
I have to share my experience at a local garage. I have done business with George’s garage for more than 25 years. George and his son are both dependable and honest, it might not be want you want to hear, for example you need new brakes or new shocks, but at least they are honest and tell you so that you are safe on the road. They always give a good estimate of time. And they warn me about what repairs are coming up, like next month you are going to need an oil change. I learned very young to always have a good relationship with your mechanic, it can save your life! George’s on Mooretown Road — 565-2299 — is the place to go he has invested in our community we should invest in him.
Thanks to Owens Heating and Air — 566- 4681 — for prompt response to fix our A/C problem. Excellent service!

How come nobody complained when Donald Trump took his whole family to London a couple of weeks ago? Thank you.
All presidents are required to obey, protect, and defend our Constitution which, critically, includes freedom of the press. Trump's loud, persistent, and dangerous public criticism of any media unfavorable to him as "fake news" and calling them "the enemy of the people" clearly violates his responsibilities to the Constitution. Such behavior could be considered "crimes and misdemeanors," which are impeachable under the Constitution. Remember that Trump works for us and we can fire him, not the other way around.
The pep rally in Orlando last Tuesday showed those of us who can remember events further back then last week that the president is a one-hit wonder who appears to still believe that his Democratic opponent next year will once again be Secretary Clinton.
I once had a boss that was considered a narcissist, but that didn’t bother me, as he was able to back up is narcissism with great results and was the best boss I’d ever had. If President Trump shows signs of narcissism, that’s alright with me, as our economy keeps growing in the right direction.
Once more we find in the Last Word a comment about President Obama. Now he was an outsider and shouldn't have been elected. It seems that according to many local Trump fans, that you are already an outsider if you are not wealthy and a non-white person. I am waiting for the locals to explain why the Obama years were such a disaster and so bad for the American people. Please explain in your own words and experiences. Just the facts, please
Many thanks to the Williamsburg Library for hosting the recent presentation by Francis Gary Powers Jr. He is a lively speaker and very well-informed about the history of his father and his relationship with the federal government during and well after the "U-2" incident. He also had video snippits and backstory about the making of the Steven Spielberg movie "Bridge of Spies" for which he was an onsite consultant. Well done.
