Looking for …
I was wondering how you can get the medical records from the now-defunct Williamsburg Community Hospital. If anybody knows how to do that, I’d very much appreciate that.
If you’re looking for Magen Love, she is now at Shear Creations at 240 McLaws Circle, Suite130.
Does anyone know the status of Aladdin Consignment Shop?
Can someone tell me what happened to the consignment shop on Second Street in the Parkway Building? The shop was called “M C Upscale.” They had dresses, handbags and jewelry there. I took clothes in and a few weeks later everything was gone. No word or notification that they were closing. Please respond to the Last Word if you know what happened and when we can get our clothes back and where. Thank you.
Where can fluorescent light bulb tubes be recycled or disposed of?
Lost: White gold hoop earring in the Walmart shopping center or shop a few days ago. A reward will be given. Thank you. 757-645-4467.
Is there a business in Williamsburg that repairs sliding glass patio doors that no longer close correctly?
Looking for a reputable furniture repair person who is preferably local with excellent references for bedroom furniture repair and possible refinishing. Please respond in the Last Word. Thank you.
Does anyone know where hairstylist Taylor went? She used to work at the Super Cuts on John Tyler. Would be wonderful to know. Thank you.
Can someone recommend a treatment to eliminate moles and voles from your gardens? I have used off-the-shelf products with no luck and am hoping someone has a "sure proof" method of something to get the job done. Many thanks.
Is there anyone who would volunteer to record the voice of a person who is a historian, a member of the Virginia Historical Society, who has a wealth of information about the area around Toano — old farmhouses, families, businesses, the school, churches and Civil War activities around Route 60, Forge Road and the Whitehall area on Rochambeau? Please call 566-0869 prior to 9 p.m. in the evening. Thank you.
The proposed paramilitary combat range in the southern end of New Kent County, if passed, will destroy businesses and homes in the Barhamsville hamlet. Already illegal according to county code, there should be no question that this will bring unsafe living for children on school buses, and noise 15 hours a day that will have a deleterious effect on horse farms in the area, including the Dream Catchers Therapeutic Ranch, which provides miraculous services for those human beings with a variety of issues, including PTSD. The passage of this proposal could wipe them out, to say nothing of other farms and businesses in the area. There is no place in New Kent County for such a facility, and it goes against the comprehensive plan and laws created by the very people who will vote on this issue.
Sales tax increase
Looks like a letter to the editor by Michael Grimes nailed it. Sen. Norment made a cash grab for the counties using tourism as his excuse. Rumor has it that he is not running again — so nothing to lose. What do we do? Tell everyone you know about the Tommy tax, SB 942, and begin a citizens’ movement to repeal it and vote Mason out. Let’s do it!
Will the city and residents still have access/right-of-way and parking for the city pool and rec center that is on the back side — across the parking lot from the current Ace Hardware Store — of the Midtown Row development?
Free to you
I have 12 constructed storage boxes, three mirror boxes and two medium-size moving boxes free to anyone who will come and get them. Respond by email: email@example.com.
We have a Whitney upright piano in need of a little bit of TLC, available for free. It is quite heavy and will require several people to move, but it is on the ground floor. Call 258-4888.
Small baby grand piano in excellent condition — yours for the moving. Used and maintained by a local church that needs the space. To see it and play it, call 757-876-0869.
I have a lot of acrylic paints, all colors, to give away. Would really like to give them to a teacher or school. Must pick up. Leave your number with Last Word and I will call you.
About Last Word
Is it true that the Last Word has now been changed to the Final Word by July 4? Editor’s note: That’s news to us here at the Last Word, where it’s business as usual.
Somebody needs to tell the Workforce Housing Task Force how ridiculous it is to put flyers on buses: The people who ride the bus already know about the problem, and the people who can do something about it don’t ride buses. There isn’t an awareness problem; it’s a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) problem. They need to talk to developers and others who can actually do something – it needs to be made profitable for them and palatable to proposed neighbors. When they figure that one out, they will have the solution. Until then, forget so-called “awareness building;” anyone who is not aware of the situation has been living under a rock. There simply is not the will to find a solution satisfactory to everyone.
The National Anthem, to me, represents all that’s good in our country. I respect people’s rights: if they don’t want to stand, then don’t. It’s my honor to stand and respect all men and women who have given so much. NFL players can sit, kneel, do whatever they want. However, I won’t support them. I’ve been to my last game, watched my last game on TV and no longer have any NFL hats or jerseys. That’s my right and privilege. NFL attendance and jersey sales are down and that’s the privilege of fans. At some point, NFL owners and the league may not be able to pay the huge salaries of those who sit and kneel.
The rocks outside the Monticello Avenue post office will certainly prevent a distracted driver from hitting the gas by mistake and plunging through the glass walls. They will also certainly stop a driver intent on intentionally harming someone. It’s simply the times we live in.
To the person whose hydrangea bush has never bloomed: I, too, had that problem until a neighbor suggested not cutting it back last fall. This spring, I've had more than 60 clusters of blooms on a bush that used to only give me one or two (if any). I had been cutting the bush back almost to the ground and not cutting it back at all has made all the difference — and the dose of Miracle Grow certainly didn't hurt.
When you trim the foliage from your hydrangea bush, leave the stalks tall, do not trim short. Your bush will bloom next year.
In her letter to the editor on June 23, Judy Tyson spelled out how many ways teachers go above and beyond their “pay grade” and hours required within the schoolhouse. This is an addendum: Many times, a week or two if lucky, a teacher may be told that “Oh, by the way, you now have another class to add to your day – unfortunately your ‘planning period’ is now gone.” This happened to my daughter-in-law, a College of William and Mary graduate who teaches high school physical science in Prince William County. Again, with very short notice, elementary school teachers may be informed, “We need you to teach another grade level next year.” Imagine the work going into that news – all your lesson plans and materials are now irrelevant and must be changed. There goes that summer off.
The problem with immigration law is that once it is passed neither party wants to adhere completely to it. Pressure groups, lobbyists, and big external money ensure that immigration law is never fully followed and is a political football. You cannot blame one specific president for what has occurred (and they should stay out of this completely). But you can condemn Congress for lacking the will and backbone to ensure what is written is what happens. If you don't like the law, change the law, but whatever you pass, you must adhere to it.
A June 30 commenter stated that the policy of separating immigrant children from their parents started in 2014 under Obama. That policy was indeed proposed to his administration in 2014 but was rejected. This is strictly a Trump initiative. Does the writer really think that such a draconian measure would have gone unnoticed in 2014 had it been enacted then?
The deplorable mess on the U.S.-Mexico border, which has been caused by the president and Jeff Sessions, where no one seems to know who is in charge, what the policy is, and most importantly where most of the children torn from their parents are, makes the actions of the clown cops pouring out of a small car in the circus look like the behavior of a well-trained police force. And, sadly, the American people are getting stuck with the bill for this unplanned disaster.
Trump and Sessions: Cage them up.
I’ve been watching a couple of the national news channels about the screaming children wanting their mom and daddy, and they’ve been separated from them at the border. I could probably go find the mother or parents or siblings of the 14-year-old girl that was raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant down in Grove in James City County or, over on the South Side, the two teenage girls that were run into by an illegal immigrant drunken driver and killed, and probably go on and on. We’re only hearing one side of the story. Thank you.
Here is an idea: Have all those Democrats who insist that we let in everyone from Central America and Mexico take a family in and pay for all their basic needs. That way Democrats get to feel good about their self-righteousness and the rest of us don’t have to pay.
Congratulations, Mr. President, for once again making the cover of Time magazine.
The immigration policy is a tremendous conundrum. Why don’t we get one of the 15 intelligence agencies in the federal government to find out who and why we’re spending ten thousand dollars per head—that’s mother, father, children—to have these coyotes bring them up from Central America. Once you find the source, naturally you have control of the problem. You don’t have to have a Ph.D. in public administration to figure it out, but both the Republicans and the Democrats are self-serving. They’re not serving the people. Thank you.
There has been so much discussion about parents and children being separated when coming illegally into the country. If they had taken the proper steps to begin with, they would not even have this problem. But, most importantly, why would they even want to come here in the first place, knowing in advance that this would happen?
In 2018, the U.S. government will give Mexico $87,660,000 in foreign aid. The largest segment, 56 percent, will go toward peace and security. What is that buying? Time to put taxpayers’ money to work making America safe for legal immigration!
Why doesn’t President Trump house the refugees at Mar-a-Lago, Doral, Palm Beach, Bedminster, or another of his exclusive -- except for foreign workers -- resorts?
Obama promised comprehensive immigration reform during his first year in office when Democrats controlled both chambers. Now Trump is asking Congress to do their job and pass one again? Congress is very good at fixing the blame but never act to fix the problem. We the people need to act and vote out all incumbents!
The Food Lion at the corner of 199 and Route 5 is being renewed, looks great — they’re getting there. And I want to send a special thanks to Paul for service above the call of duty when I had a craving for fried chicken. Thank you, Paul. Continue good vibes.
Kudos to Allison, the very nice lady behind me at Walmart on Sunday afternoon. I gave the cashier $8 to pay for my groceries and was surprised when she returned the money to me. Allison had told her she would pay for my food. Thank you, Allison! I will certainly pay it forward.
I am so impressed with the community events being hosted by our local agencies. From the neighborhood block parties to the summer reading programs to the Project 547 events and more, there is a wealth of free, quality programming offered. Thanks to all the staff and volunteers making these events so enjoyable, and I encourage more people to come out to these great community building activities.
Let it grow
To the person who thinks the median grass in Norge looks awful: The day before that comment was printed, I told my husband that I liked it. There are a variety of plants there (not just grass). I hope some of them are native plants, which are helpful to bees and butterflies. The plants are not so tall as to block the view on the other side of the road. Everything does not have to be pristine and manicured to look good. Leave some wild places also. Beauty can be in the eye of the beholder.
Why did the county waste money having “Do not encourage panhandlers” signs made and installed? The man with the poor black dog staked out his spot more than a year ago and blatantly ignores the sign. This seems to be his career choice. However, the dog isn’t given a choice.
I just sold a truck to a family member. It required driving to the DMV, standing in a line, completing paperwork, paying taxes and ordering new plates. All for a necessary element of today's world. But Scott Taylor opposes closing the gun show loophole and the transfer of guns to family members because the paperwork is inconvenient. Are his values that far out of whack?
I had an appointment with Weathercrafters to come to fix my air conditioning problem on a Monday. That morning, I realized that my husband was ill and he was admitted to the hospital. I called Weathercrafters and informed them of the situation. They were so exceptional, I have to let everyone know. I told them he would not be home until Monday at the earliest. They suggested I go home and leave my house unlocked so they could come in and appraise the damage. I was reluctant, but I trusted the company as I had been dealing with them for 10 years. They diagnosed the problem ordered the parts. In the meantime, they installed a window unit. The parts arrived on Monday and when we came home, they were there installing all the parts needed to repair my whole-house unit. Incidentally, all those parts were under warranty. Great service, great personnel. Thank you!
I would like to recommend a company called Clearly Better that came to my house to clean the gutters. They also power wash and clean windows. I have to say I was very impressed with their professionalism, honesty and a job really well done. They were also considerably cheaper than others I’ve had in the past. Their number is 757-254-2020.

I have written my Congressional representative each day for several days asking if he supports Trump's policy to separate children from their parents at our borders. He promptly sends me a thank you email saying that he is eager to answer my questions, yet he does not answer it. Constituents deserve to know their representative's views. If he supports the policy, he should speak up and own it. If he does not support the policy, he should speak out. Silence is not acceptable. I want to know where he stands.
FYI, sending the police a plate number for people breaking traffic laws does nothing, as the police must witness it themselves.
Who thought that only six handicapped parking spaces along the entire length of the main drag in New Town was adequate for a community with a large number of senior citizens in it?
James City could pick up some easy cash by stationing a police car on Devon Road in Windsor Forest. The speed limit is 25 mph, but I routinely see vehicles doing 50-60 mph as they scream in off Longhill Road.
Are the crews working on the Colonial Parkway trying to set an anti-speed world record for road repairs or something? I can't figure out how it's taking them so long to make it, not even a half-mile down the road in a month. When I go by they're mostly just standing around and half the effort seems to be in stopping traffic to single-lane all cars. Is there some federal audit possible by the NPS to determine what's going wrong, here?
On the weekend of June 16, there was a flock of some 40 Canada geese residing around the pond of the eighth hole of the golf course that runs through the Greensprings community. This flock was made of at least four families, each with three to eight unfledged juveniles and their parents. As of June 25, this flock has vanished without a trace. Clearly, they could not have flown away, as the juveniles could not fly and the parents would not leave their young. So what has become of this flock of geese?
Up in Washington
I am a Democrat and one of the growing majority of patriotic Americans opposed to Trump and his administration. However understandable as their anger may be, I find Robert De Niro's recent outburst and the Red Hen restaurant owner's ouster of Sarah Sanders to be abhorrent. Instead, we need to vote for better people and policies in our government.
The reality of Trumponomics is just beginning to sink in. Harley Davidson’s shifting jobs from Milwaukee to the EU as a response to Trump’s tariff trade war is a sign of the counterproductive nature of his actions. Even worse, this relates to our (former) allies. Will Wharton ever get its reputation back?
The right cannot, on one hand, praise a baker for refusing a wedding cake for a gay couple and on the other damn a restaurant for refusing service to a member of the president's staff because the workers find the actions of the administration on the U.S. Mexico border abhorrent. Both are reflective of someone's moral values and as such should be respected. Sadly in today's America, respecting values which go against one's political leaning is lacking.
I am both amazed and appalled at the hypocrisy of those that fault President Trump for meeting with the leader of North Korea. The outcry about meeting the leader of a regime responsible for the death of thousands and imprisonment of thousands of others seem to forget that FDR held several meetings with Stalin, or that Obama met not once but several times with Putin and Xi Jinping — both leaders of nations that have horrific human rights records and death counts that number in the millions. Obama met with Cambodian leader Hun Sen, a former member of the Kymer Rouge, responsible for the "Killing Fields" and the Cambodian genocide. Lest one forget Obama also met with the Castro brothers, leaders of Cuba and responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Cubans. President Trump met with Kim in an attempt for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Obama never attempted that lofty goal.
The Trumpers can’t help not telling the truth. One Last Word Trumper was defending Trump”s North Korea fiasco. Trump the deal maker got taken to the cleaners. International recognition to the NK president, Trump dumps on South Korea and then kisses up to Mr. Un. At least Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II and Obama didn’t grovel. Not Trump. He went many steps beyond giving away the farm and getting nothing of worth in return. The poor soul in the Last Word babbled on about a few agricultural folks being allowed into NK. Wow! Then the poor soul jumps to Iran and continues to lie. Says the U.S. gave millions to Iran. Wrong. The U.S. just returned Iran’s money the U.S. had confiscated. No taxpayer dollars went to Iran.
