Looking for …

It would be nice if the Last Word had published the phone number to the service that takes people to medical appointments to Rides. Not everybody has a computer. Editor’s note: Rides is a service of the Peninsula Agency on Aging: 757-345-6277. Faith in Action, at 757-258-5890, also provides transportation for seniors.

To the person who wanted input on My Pillows: I have replaced all of my regular pillows with the My Pillows. I had some expensive pillows that were terrible! They are adjustable and when washed, fluff so nicely. They are cleaner because they can be washed often. There is no smell. They come in regular or firm (more filling), I use both. Some have a gusset that gives a bit more support. I've given them as gifts and have the travel size also. Obviously I love them!

To the person looking for a hair stylist in Williamsburg area who is great at highlighting hair and haircuts: Call Teresa at Salon 109, number 757-229-0236. Address: 1781 Jamestown Road, Suite 150. Teresa is good with color.

I have a question. During President Obama’s eight years as president, how many young black people were killed in Chicago? There were nine killed this past weekend. Of course, he’s not in now, but I was just curious as to how many were killed from 2008 to 2016 in Chicago. Does anyone have that statistic? Thank you.

Several weeks ago, as I was entering the Staples store in Williamsburg, I was introduced to a gentleman who told me that his father had landed at Omaha Beach. Unfortunately, I did not obtain any contact information for this gentleman. Could you please contact me at 757-741-2091. I would like to learn if you would consider speaking to a local group about your father's World War !! experiences.

Just wondering

Is anyone else getting spam calls from 646-682-0912 claiming they’re from the police department? If so, let us know what it is. Thank you.

Three to four times a day, I get calls on my cellphone from Cape Charles, Virginia, 757-330-xxxx and the four numbers after that may be different each time. Does anyone know these people are? Robo calls or whatever. I block them, but they keep coming. Thank you.

Hey, Publix and Harris Teeter, how long does it take to convert a grocery store into a grocery store?

Please keep Binns

Well, Colonial Williamsburg has shot themselves in the foot again. I think it’s time for maybe the board of directors to have another meeting and make some changes. This—eliminating lovely store Binn’s from the Duke of Gloucester Street—what are you thinking? Problem is, you’re not thinking correctly. Stop this nonsense!

I was shocked and disgusted when I read about Binn’s having to move. It has been a fixture and iconic store for 55 years. What is Colonial Williamsburg trying to do? I don’t think this move is for the better — it is tearing down the charm of Colonial Williamsburg. I think we should all get together and have a petition to stop this ridiculous move. Evidently, whoever is responsible does not care about the small-town charm that has made this town what it is. Come on, Colonial Williamsburg, let’s stop all this.

Say cheesesteak

I love Philly cheesesteaks. The secret to a really great one is not just quality steak and cheese and cooked onions on the inside, but a top quality roll on the outside, and that’s where most places in town fall painfully short, in ruining the sandwich by using a soft, Wonder-bread type roll. Now the lady who used to run Sacred Grounds sandwich shop on Richmond Road always had great rolls for everything. So, wake up, you cooks out there, and find us a good bakery supplier to make a really great Philly cheesesteak.

National Night Out

Thanks to National Night Out with policemen at the Community Building. It was a very nice occasion to attend. Everything went well, and there was so much to learn about a person’s surroundings, like keeping safe, look out for scammers and all that Williamsburg had to offer. The food was delicious, and everyone was so nice. Thanks again.

Football coach

I think it is about time a prominent college should consider hiring a woman to be a head football coach. To not do so, would not be in keeping with diversity at W&M. They have hired a woman to be president, a women athletic director and now have the opportunity to make history again with a woman head football coach. I think there are many women who could fill the role just fine and not to consider this would be sexist.

Bees and butterflies

I have many, many flowers and plants. I had an abundance of bees and butterflies but since the city of Williamsburg sprayed for mosquitoes during the daylight hours — all of my bees and butterflies are gone. I haven't seen any since, but mosquitoes are still around. This needs to be investigated. The killing of the bees and butterflies is horrific.

Lost credit cards

I am the person who seems to lose a credit card every week. I read the response from one reader who stated quite emphatically that "taxpayers are the ones that end up paying for me losing my card." How so? If I knew that the poor 1%-ers in wealthy Williamsburg had to pay for me, I would be much more careful with my cards.

2nd Congressional

Just when you thought you had heard it all. Congressman Scott Taylor, 2nd Congressional District sent his paid staff out to get people to sign petitions to get Shaun Brown on the ballot. Taylor knew Brown would split the Democratic ticket. So much for his touting his Navy/SEAL experience. Did his brother SEALs teach him to be this unethical? I know they taught him how to survive in the swamp because that is where he chooses to reside. Taylor freely and proudly admits this action. Anyone who will sink this low to win an election must not feel they have anything to offer the electorate but deception.

Affordable housing

Most of the low-paying service jobs in Williamsburg/James City County are those that are demanded by the upper economic class that will not pay a living wage to their servants. Those jobs do not require college and the associated loan debt, but are essential to support the lifestyle of the elite. Those jobs also are essential for the city and county administrations' plan to ramp up tourism and retail industries that rely heavily on jobs that pay less than a living wage for the area. Our colonial ancestors understood that they needed their servants close. How many hospitality/retail workers with jobs in Williamsburg/James City County actually live here, given the over-priced rents in the area? Disgraceful.

To the commenter stating that Williamsburg shouldn’t be a top place to retire because you can’t live on Social Security of $1060 or minimum wage: I got news for you. There isn’t any place in the U.S. where you can do that. When you chose to get an education and work hard, you also plan on your retirement income. Also, minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage; it was meant for part-time work or to supplement a family’s income.

Words of caution

I live in St George’s Hundred. Yesterday someone broke into my car -- in my driveway. The police were called in. So please lock your cars and keep your eyes open. Anything suspicious, call the police. Thank you.

Parking woes

We live in the same neighborhood as a local politician. I do not understand why he cannot follow our community rules and park his cars in his driveway and not on the community street. I certainly hope he doesn’t come forth in the neighbors for money again when he runs for another office.

Surprised to learn

Just reading a report on osteoporosis and surprised to read that very commonly used medicines like nexium, Prilosec and Zantac are among medicines that cause bone loss! Are doctors who prescribe these to their patients telling patients about bone loss? Other medicines are listed, too, and I hope doctors know this and inform their patients.

Are you looking for somebody to repair your washer or dryer or dishwasher? I highly recommend George at GW Appliance Repair. He returns your call, arrives when promised and does an excellent job. In addition, his cost is very reasonable. He can be found at (757) 535-5649. Thank you.

If you are looking for someone to repair or lay carpet in your home, we strongly recommend Seth Doyle, who calls himself “Louie.” He did a repair job for us that was very impressive. He was punctual, competent, reasonable and fun to be with. His number is 757-713-8102.

Everyone should visit a new restaurant on George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown. It’s called “The Chipper,” and they specialize in home-battered fish and chips and it’s outstanding. Anybody that’s been in England has experienced good fish and chips and mashed peas or smashed peas—they need to go there. The people are super friendly. It’s easy to get in and out—takeout is there. You can eat there and they’re getting ready to open a patio. They’re at 5619 George Washington Memorial Highway, 757-874-2447.]

Democratic socialism

Fear not, those of you who cannot stand the thought of all Americans making a livable wage, having health care and access to education. Socialist Democracy works very well in Scandinavia. The security of a decent lifestyle for all workers (and those who are unable to work) results in a happier populace. Capitalism is still encouraged and rewarded. What does it say about you when you resent people being able to provide basic living essentials — health care, housing, food, education — for their families?

Comparing Democratic socialism to communism is like comparing capitalism to the Nazis. Democratic socialisms exist, not in dictatorships, but in Scandinavian countries like Finland, Norway and Sweden. In the United States, socialist policies alive today include Social Security and Medicare.

Norman Thomas, six-time candidate for US president on the Socialist Party ticket, who said, “The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until America will one day be a socialist nation without knowing how it happened.”

Thank you

Many, many thanks to the wonderfully kind folks who assisted my 89-year-old husband when he fell to the ground after tripping over a level change as we exited the Butterfly Festival at the Williamsburg Botanical Garden in Freedom Park! Your care and concern were so appreciated and I’m glad to say he is A-Ok with only a bad scrape and some bruises on his left hand, knee and hip. Thanks to his participation in the Comber Physical Therapy Rock Steady boxing program for those with Parkinson’s, featured on the front page of the Virginia Gazette a few weeks ago, he can recover!

I was having some strange computer issues. Cox told me to call an electrician. Instead, I called Khalid at We Fix Computers. He diagnosed the problem and fixed it promptly. Khalid is a very pleasant person and really knows his way around the computer world. Contact him at 757-291-3663. Thank you.

I would like to extend a big thank you to Paul at the Target (Williamsburg-East) store. I appreciate your patience in assisting me in purchasing the IPad for my elderly dad. During a busy time at the store, you were being called on by several other associates (face to face and via your in-store communication device) but yet you didn't make me feel like you were rushing my decision making or purchasing process. You went far and beyond and your kindness was not taken for granted. Thank you!

Up in Washington

Trump's continued use of the term" Russian hoax" is a green light to Putin to continue committing cyber espionage, an act of war against our nation. This is aiding and abetting the enemy, treason.

I found Mr. Spence’s letter to the editor interesting but not particularly factual. I do agree that I also had higher expectations from the Helsinki Conference—it offered Trump a world stage to confront Russia on any number of issues—he chose not to for whatever reason. Then again, I am still waiting for an explanation why Obama did nothing to stop the Russian interference in our election since it occurred on his watch. I also wonder why Obama had private meetings with the following dictators: Putin, Hun Sen, Xi Jinping, Hugo Chavez and Raul Castro, to name a very few. I was surprised that Mr. Spence used any reference to our Intelligence agencies. The oft repeated mis-statement that all 17 intelligence agencies supported the contention of Russian interference is simply not true. Less than half made that assertion and, coincidentally, those intelligence agencies were the only ones led by Obama political appointees.

Trump, who had to refund $25 million to 6,000 people who he bilked through Trump University, had the audacity to attack LeBron James who put up $25 million for a school for at-risk kids. Real class act.

The real endangered species President Trump is trying to save is the working U.S. taxpayer. Increasing jobs and opportunities were completely ignored by past administrations! Now the Democratic Socialist Party (free this and free that) wants to continue to ruin this country.

Swamp Creatures—the elites and incumbents from both parties are all part of the D.C. swamp. Those of us who put “American First” over a failed two-party system need to drain the swamp. Time to vote out incumbents (Wittman, Kaine, Warner) and send them packing!

There has been one depression, one near depression and 11 recessions under the last eight GOP presidents. Only one of those started a trade war and none of them filed bankruptcysix times. The paltry 157k jobs created last month is the canary in the coal mine.
