Last Word on William and Mary, Aug. 29

W&M growth

The new College of William and Mary president sounds like a remarkable gift for W&M and the town, but please, don’t gobble up our tiny downtown. Build student housing and office spaces on campus. The nibbling of in-town businesses and houses takes away opportunity for permanent residents to live in town as a part of a permanent support.

Downtown changes

Restaurant owners in Colonial Williamsburg complain there isn’t enough business for them and oppose food trucks. Some of these same owners serve on the Economic Development Authority, the one approving grants to new restaurants to locate in Colonial Williamsburg, a scratch-the-head moment. Another scratch-the-head moment, the City of Williamsburg pushed to get a new sales tax increase to help their bottom line from poor fiscal decisions — the fund balance is gone — yet they have money to invest in the highest risk profession there is. Can someone explain this?

John McCain

With the death this weekend of Sen. John McCain, the United States has lost a giant of a man who will be sorely missed even by those whose politics opposed his. There is now a hole in the U.S. Senate which will never be filled; there is no one in the Senate today who is capable of filling his shoes.

Shame on Donald Trump for his disrespect and total reprehensible behavior concerning Sen. John McCain, an honored veteran and a senator of this country who has served the military and the country very well. I think this is reprehensible for a president to ignore or disrespect someone of his stature. But, what else is new?

Cheers to the choir

Jamestown Youth Choir! Music, choral music certainly, requires and promotes active cooperation and coordination to produce harmony and beauty. So, thank you Chris Mooney, for inaugurating the new Jamestown Youth Choir. Yes, instead of ignoring bullying or spending precious dollars on promoting team violence — i.e., football, a known factor in brain damage — let’s encourage more children and young people to develop their voices. Let’s endorse and sponsor cooperation, beauty and harmony. We look forward to enjoying the music of the new choir.

Looking for …

In response to questions in previous editions of the Last Word about furniture repairs, I suggest you contact Jason Migliore at 1-804-920-0086. Jason does fantastic work, and you will be pleased that you called him. He does serve customers in Williamsburg and his prices are very fair.

From bubble-wrap to boxes, I need moving supplies, please, Call 757-817-7412 and I'll reuse. Thanks!

Is there a fall yard sale open to all? Our neighborhood association is not having one due to construction using the entrance next to the usual site. The association has not made alternate plans for its members.

Looking for someone to sew two very simple blouses. I have the silhouette but need sleeves and collar added. Please text 757-812-2440. Thank you.

Candidate forums

Once again I found out through a letter to the editor from the League of Women Voters that the incumbent congressional candidates refuse to participate in a forum. Last year it was the incumbent candidates running for state office. Is it a coincidence that the ones who refuse are all Republicans? A candidate forum is one of the best ways for voters to learn about the candidates’ qualifications and policies. If voters have to depend on advertisements, they are not able to get the complete information they need. In past years, I did attend forums put on by the League of Women Voters. They were well attended and very helpful in my decision making. Shame on Scott Taylor and Robert Wittman for not helping to make democracy work.

Health insurance

Don’t be fooled by President Trump’s low-cost, short-term health insurance with grossly inadequate coverage. Also, there is no coverage if you are in poor health. Let’s hope that cooler heads can undo the undermining and dismantling of Obamacare to make it work properly.

Counting trees

Reply to Last Word comment on 21 trees coming down — is there any way to stop this? My thoughts are to vote the persons out of office that are responsible for killing our resources.

Affordable housing

To the commenter who stated that he has “nine years of postsecondary education,” education is only as good as the job it allows you to get. I know many people with degrees in subjects that are almost useless in helping you to support yourself. In this economy, with unemployment at 4 percent, there is no reason why anyone with qualifications should settle for a job which doesn’t allow for an annual salary increase. I state again: you buy the house you can afford.

NFL and the anthem

Since 2012, the NFL has prevented players from, or fined players for, showing respect for God, social causes, police murdered because they were police, or the memory of 9/11; but the NFL has allowed players to show disrespect for our flag and National Anthem, for America and the American people. It appears the NFL’s support of free speech and expression is a bit lopsided.

More panhandling

I think people need to understand that begging or panhandling is actually a very old profession. It’s gone on throughout time. You see it in the 18th-century Williamsburg. Gov. Botetourt put aside money in the household budget for beggars who come to the door. There’s a wonderful Sherlock Holmes story about a man who kind of fools his wife — he, in fact, is a beggar. She thinks he’s a clerk, that he’d make so much more money begging — but that’s what he does. So it’s a very old profession. So far as for that dog, I’ve not seen the dog out there, but I think that people need to realize that this is, in fact, a profession. So encouraging him to get a job, he already has one. It can be a good job, and it’s tax free. Thank you.

This goes out to the panhandler persecutor, you know, who seems to have a thing about the man and his dog. How about your Heritage Humane Society — why don’t you contact them? Their pet pantry has food for destitute people and their animals. The dog is apparently well cared for or it wouldn’t be there. Individuals who leave their dogs when they go into a grocery store in this heat — how about that? You need to focus on more things than just one individual. Why don’t you get out there and rescue an animal or volunteer?

The panhandler's dog is being used to make money for the owner’s chosen profession. Its owner doesn't want dog food. Does the dog have a dog license and a current rabies vaccine as required by law? The police should check this. The dog is forced to lie in the median of a busy intersection and flinches with each passing car. It's dangerous. It is abuse. Purchasing dog food for the dog isn't a solution to protecting it. It is being fed. I hope the panhandler will move to a safer location.

As for the panhandlers, get used to them. As income inequality continues to increase in this country, more and more people will turn to panhandling to survive. They are not scam artists, like the online and phone scammers. Listen to their stories before judging them. Outlawing panhandling is not possible or desirable since it is difficult to distinguish this from charity fundraising and because of the right to freedom of speech. Why do you insist on condemning people who are just like you but make less money because their employers pay them less or because they cannot find suitable work at all?

Jacksonville shootings

Another deranged shooter goes on a rampage and kills several people in Jacksonville, Fla. Once again, there will be the predictable meaningless word salad from the political right and, once again, they will pocket the NRA's money and repeat their line that this is not the time to discuss meaningful gun control laws. More bodies piled up at the feet of politicians and the NRA, and many more to come.

Emissions

My concern about gaseous emissions are only those that come from the mouths of so-called environmentalists who seek to deny me of the joy of having a pet, would forbid me the enjoyment of a steak and the ability to drive to the pet shop or a restaurant. Please let me live my life.

I went to Jimmy’s Oven & Grill, 7201 Richmond Road in Toano, and last night “Kids Eat Free” was in progress. It was nice to see a restaurant give back and feed kids, every Thursday and Friday (5-8 p.m.) for free. I found out he feeds the neighborhood every Thanksgiving. What a great place to eat.

Paul Pierce, a local handyman, has done several jobs for us and he does a good job, cleans up after and has reasonable prices. His phone number is 757-592-1089. Email paulpierce315@gmail.com.

Congratulations to Grecian Plate for being featured in the Coastal Virginia Magazine recently, and I quote: “Diners will find the restaurant to be a gem. The owners are affable and treat patrons as if they have stopped by their home.” The Grecian Plate, 4920 Monticello Ave. in Williamsburg.

Democratic socialism

To those folks living in the "high-rent" areas who constantly speak of the evils of socialism: put your money where your mouth is and stop taking Social Security and Medicare. They are classic examples of the kinds of positive programs that a social conscience develops.

For those who claim that Scandinavian countries are denied world leadership status by foolishly opting for Democratic Socialism, and a wonderful standard of living, great education, inexpensive universal health care, family leave and a great infrastructure, why do they prefer not to spend enormous amounts of tax dollars to fight all over the world while the nation's infrastructure crumbles, the education system is destroyed, and the ill and old are discarded? No laughing about the horrible people who treat the less fortunate with disdain, telling them that they deserve nothing. Trump has emboldened the evil among us.

Road worries

A comment was made about a vehicle being towed because it was parked in front of a driveway. I'm always amazed at the people who think that if there is no sign or marking to prohibit something, then it must be OK. Common sense and courtesy would dictate that you should not park in front of a driveway, whether there is a sign or not. The same goes for fire hydrants. It's called being aware of your surroundings. Williamsburg is notorious for not marking curbs very well.

Thank you

As a resident of Ford’s Colony who is recovering from surgery, I want to thank the community handymen volunteers Kent Kipling and Phil Klein for repairing my two doors and making them operable.

Last week I tripped over a cement parking guide in the parking lot in front of Ulta in New Town. It was my fault, and I was able to get up and enter the store. The store manager and helpers were wonderful as they cleaned up my elbow, brought out a first aid kit and applied bandages. I then made my purchases and went on my way. At 80, I appreciate such care and reassurance. The Ulta store is well managed and well prepared.

Up in Washington

After Cohen pleaded guilty last Tuesday and admitted under oath that he paid off two women under the direct order of a federal candidate to silence them just before the election in 2016, it is shown by the New York Federal Prosecutors filing that the president is an unindicted co-conspirator and just as guilty as Cohen and should be held to account and removed from office.

If Cohen pays Stormy Daniels $130,000 because she says she wants it or she’ll go public, then there’s no campaign violation if Trump had him pay it. Because he could have him pay it for many reasons. One, he doesn’t want his family to know. It’s not a campaign violation. They tried this against Edwards in North Carolina — it didn’t fly. The other thing is, if Trump put in more money into his campaign than the $130,000 — which he did, he put millions into his campaign — than we also don’t have a violation. It’s just smoke and mirrors and everybody knows it.

Some Trump supporters are feeling like first graders who find out Santa Claus isn't exactly who they were led to believe he was.

Not since the Nixon White House has there been a president who has been named in a criminal confession as an unindicted co-conspirator in a criminal conspiracy to pervert justice.

It's always a bad day when not one, but two of your lawyers, are giving evidence against you to the feds.

When Manafort goes on trial next month in DC, the jury needs to be kept in seclusion so that there is no chance for the president and his Twitter fingers to do witness tampering as he did in the first trial this month in Alexandria.

The Last Word is always so entertaining, especially the political comments. The right bashes the left, the left bashes the right. Reminds me of an old question, "How do you know if a politician is lying?" Answer: His/Her mouth is moving! Why can't people get it through their heads that They. Are. All. The. Same. Is Trump lying to us? Yes. Did Obama lie to us? Yes. Clinton? Yes. Bushes One and Two? Yes and yes. And on and on and on. National, state, local, Republican or Democrat, no difference! So many no longer vote for the person they really believe in, but for who (in their opinion) is the lesser of two evils. Sad!!

Trump should resign and let Pence pardon him. End the nightmare of total deceit and corruption. I laughed out loud when I read the item that compared Trump's lies to those (real or perceived) of others. It is no lie to say that lying is one area in which Trump truly is the best.

It is time we quit criticizing Rudy Giuliani. We should be thankful that we have someone who is letting us know how President Trump thinks.
