I hope everyone is safe during the upcoming hurricane. Reminder to all businesses. Your employees have homes and families. Do not stay open until the last possible moment. Close at a safe hour, allowing time to prepare.
Too many trees
There is such a thing as too many of anything, whether it is people, trees, deer, cars, etc. I am not against trees; I do object when too many trees cause mold, wood rot, lack of visibility in parking lots and turn lanes, and no view of the sky or sunshine, to give a few examples. Trees are so plentiful in Williamsburg that you could remove half of them, and you would not notice any difference.
Is the person that said we have too many trees an idiot or just not know better? Trees are our resources for oxygen. Trees create an ecosystem to provide habitat and food for birds and other animals. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, such as sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide, from the air and release oxygen. One large tree can supply a day's supply of oxygen for four people. Life could not exist on Earth without trees because they produce most of the oxygen that humans and wildlife breathe. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen using the process of photosynthesis.
We had a meal today at a restaurant in James City County and realized we were charged 11% for taxes in addition to our meal items. As local residents, I don’t believe we will be eating out too often in the future. Our local officials and other politicians can only think of raising our taxes. Should we drive to Newport News or are their taxes high, too?
Last week, I was able to go on a ride along with James City County Police Officer Patrick Fitzsimmons. I learned a lot about police work, but, most important, I got to see how our police interact with the public. Officer Fitzsimmons showed professionalism as he went about his duties. I was impressed with how he handled the many different situations he encountered during my ride. I believe he is representative of all the fine officers of our county. We’re in good hands with our police department. I encourage all citizens to sign up for a ride along with our county. It will be an eye-opening experience and bring you a renewed appreciation for our law enforcement officers.
One of my young, millennial friends and I were talking about 9/11 the other day, and he mentioned a third building in NYC that came down. Being pretty sure there were only two buildings/two planes, I went to prove him wrong. Low and behold, there was a third building. Even though World Trade Center 7 was not hit by a plane, it came down symmetrically at freefall speed around 5:20 in the evening. Knowing a little about physics and the law of momentum conservation, this blows my mind.
The city of Williamsburg needs more housing, more apartments for the lower-income people and the people who are working in lower-income jobs. They need more apartments that are based on people’s income and for senior citizens that are based on people’s Social Security income.
Before they spend money on a new building, maybe the Williamsburg library ought to get the air conditioning fixed in the current one. I tried to work there one day and the inside temperature must have been in the 80s with no air. It was so hot people around me were sweating and I finally had to leave. Who is responsible for that? Thank you.
Looking for …
Where I can locally buy 8x11 1/2 inch 2-pack and 6x9 inch 3-pack EZ Foil aluminum foil broiler pans? Ukrop’s carried them and often offered buy 2 get 1 free. I have not been able to find them, even at the dollar store, since Ukrop’s left. They are very expensive on Amazon.
I’m looking for someone who could recommend a person who could string outdoor Christmas tree lights in a very tall tree outside our home. Thank you very much.
I’ve been trying to reach Joe’s Mobile Lawnmower Service for over a week, and I don’t get any reply. Does anybody know if he’s still in business? If not, do you know of a reliable mobile lawnmower service that will come to your house with a fair price? Thank you very much.
Lamp repair: When the store on Jamestown Road closed, I was referred to a retired gentleman named Joe Bates (Collectors Gallery). He repaired our lamps just fine. Since I am in Providence Forge, I met him in the parking lot in Williamsburg at Barnes & Noble. We were very satisfied with him.
For those interested in lamp repair: Cody’s Lights & Repair in Phoebus is highly recommended: http://www.codyslampshop.com or (757) 727-0333.
Does anyone have a recipe for sweet bread like the Sportsmans Bar & Grill serve with their Birdie chicken salad? It's the best!
For those of you who blame the lower economic classes for their plight: I recommend you read the meticulously researched, “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America,” by Barbara Ehrenreich. Written many years ago by an author who actually lived the life. Maybe then you will leave off your attacks on panhandlers.
The overriding concern about the panhandler’s dog has been the location chosen by the panhandler. This summer, it has been hot enough to fry an egg in that area, let alone a dog huddled underneath a black/white umbrella. Not 200 yards away (where 199 comes off onto Monticello near the overpass) is an area with trees which would provide some relief for the man and his dog. The entrance in/out of Monticello Market is heavily shaded. I’m sure there are other places in the Williamsburg area. For those who want to help this man, please encourage him to find a shadier location, not only for himself, but for the dog he supposedly loves. I believe the handouts would increase because folks would not become upset (just as I have) at the apparent disregard for the dog being forced to lie where she does.
How can we get one big pothole fixed in the Williamsburg Crossing shopping center? The single pothole is near Bruster's Real Ice Cream and the Eye Clinic. The hole is very deep and can damage the car tires. I don't know who is the property manager of the shopping center.
Free to you
Large mirror, 8 ft.x5 ft. Please call 757-22 0-1337 and leave a message.
Dishwasher, box TV (not a flat screen TV) and a fabric bench seat that fits a Honda van. Please call 220-3712. Thank you.
When I go into a restaurant, I expect to have a nice meal with the waitresses coming to pick up my dirty plates before I leave, and also I would love to go into a restaurant and not be hugged by employees. That would be a much more enjoyable experience.
About Last Word
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Last Word only accepted items that were uplifting, such as compliments to local people or businesses, helpful tips to enrich our lives, thanks for good deeds done and reports of acts of kindness. I think that format would be much more helpful and worthwhile than some of the mean-spirited, judgmental and narrow-minded comments that occasionally are submitted.
Can anyone tell me what is happening in the large fields between the High Street apartments and the water retaining pond on the other side? Also, why are the grounds of the retaining pond no longer cared for? It used to be a pleasant walk where you could see ducks, geese and other waterfowl.
Well, I just saw one that takes the cake: A painting company van with ladders on it — this isn’t somebody that goes around to look at the jobs — a complete work van with a company name on it with handicap license plates. How does that work?
Nike and the NFL
I wouldn’t wear Nike’s if they were given to me. I call on all patriotic Americans to throw theirs away. Furthermore, patriots shouldn’t watch the NFL.
Equal Rights Amendment
The Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was overwhelmingly passed by Congress in 1972. The ERA guarantees rights to all citizens regardless of gender. Ratification is required by 38 state legislatures for the ERA to become part of the Constitution. Last May, Illinois became the 37th to ratify and Virginia can become the 38th but, shamefully, our Republican-controlled legislature in Richmond has been blocking passage.
Have you noticed? Most restaurants are breaking the law. They allow anyone to enter the kitchen while food is being prepared and served. The Health Department issues food handlers’ permits and instructions on the proper use of rubber gloves. The Health Department reports the problem to Social Services, but they lack the compassion to help people in need.
Seriously, a commenter said we should stop watching Fox because it’s one sided towards conservatism. What about CNN? It’s one sided towards liberalism. Also, CNN has been caught many times putting out stories, without first checking their sources, that turned out to be false. The reason why conservatives choose to watch Fox is that all other stations are run by liberal Democrats which love to push their liberal agenda.
I used a suggestion from Last Word about a contractor. The customer said that Tidewater Carpet & Upholstery Steam Cleaning Company, telephone number 757-380-8820, was phenomenal and reasonably priced. I will confirm this. I used them and will use them again on doing whole house cleaning.
On Aug. 29, Food Lion celebrated their remodeled stores. Everything in the stores was neatly stocked. I felt like I was in a whole brand new store. They gave away 100 gift cards, thermal tote bags and also cutting boards. The employees were very nice and excited about the renovation. I live near Food Lion on Merrimac Trail. I shop at any Food Lion store when I am at various areas. The ribbon cutting was a joy to attend. Please stop in the store. Prices are very good. Thank you.
Tuscany Restaurant, 757-378-3486, recently catered a dinner party for my husband’s birthday. Aldo and Kate (co-owners) could not have been more accommodating, from helping to plan the menu, flexible to my husband’s taste, delivering and setting up everything on time at our home. The wait staff that delivered the food was wonderful. We highly recommend this restaurant, which now has a delivery service for their carry-out menu.
I normally repair my computers myself. But when my wife’s email folders disappeared and she could not load up her email without getting a synchronization error message, I was stumped. I realized I needed someone smarter than me. I googled computer repair in Williamsburg and chose Computer Clinic on Jamestown Road. Ryan seemed familiar with the problem. I dropped it off and the next day he called, telling me it was fixed. Money well spent to have peace of mind. Thanks, Ryan!
To use the nominee's own words against him, if appointed to the court, Kavanaugh will be three zip codes to the right of Judge Kennedy. He should be in the same zip code as former Justice O'Conner, a solid middle-of-the-road justice.
I want to ask the caller who said that the Democrats’ response to the president’s current pick for the Supreme Court was a joke: Was it a joke when Mitch McConnell refused to do his constitutional duty and did not even interview an appointee for the Supreme Court? I don’t think so.
There have been a lot of protestors screaming out at the confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh. Do you know that you can’t come into a confirmation hearing unless you have been invited in by one of the senators? So the senators who don’t want Kavanaugh purposely brought in these screaming, hysterical people who had to be carried out. They seem to act up in this confirmation hearing on cue. It’s so silly.
A big thank you to the wonderful lady living in Indian Springs who heard my calls for help after I locked myself out of the house while watering plants on my neighbor’s two-story deck and to Williamsburg Police Officer J. Parks for coming to my rescue. Your kind efforts were greatly appreciated and will be long remembered. Thanks for the Slurpee, my sore throat needed it.
Up in Washington
Papadopoulos’ sentence today was 14 days in jail. What’s the big whoop? How much money did the lawyers get out of this deal for a nothing? Millions, I would bet. This hoax keeps on going on and they can’t prove anything. What a joke! What a hoax on the American taxpayers.
Allow me to congratulate the Williamsburg evangelical pastor whose religious convictions allowed him to address the president's immoral behavior. Your sincerity is evidently more profound than those regarded as the supposedly evangelical leaders. The other religious leaders of various denominations are silent. Silence denotes consent.
It’s interesting that Obama is trying to get all young people to vote Democrat. Do young people realize that under the Trump presidency, they now have a much better chance of getting a job? On the other hand, maybe young people prefer to live off their parents for the rest of their lives.
