The Williamsburg Pottery is, in fact, looking for a way to utilize its 750-plus acres that would benefit the greater Williamsburg Area in the way of tourism and development. Tax dollars have never paid for our current development nor the two traffic lights on Route 60; we even pay the electric bill for both. The Pottery has been in business for 80 years successfully and has always put the community first with generous land donations and yearly donations to several charities and scholarships for local youth, forever carrying on the legacy of Jimmy Maloney.
Parking at CW
Get a horse! Now that our nasty parking spaces in Merchants Square will be removed after the first of the year, it might be a wise plan to ask Santa for a horse. Let's hope the colonial theme will be carried through with hitching posts. Good for the grass.
Looking for …
We are responding to the "looking for a reasonably priced hairdresser who does highlights on medium-length hair." Please contact Scotland Street Salon at 757-220-6850 to book your appointment. We would love to help you.
Eager to hear from local people in Williamsburg — where do you shop for good lamp shades? I can’t seem to find the place. Thank you.
I was told John Jordan (previously Sideline) opened shop in the Providence Forge area. I am still trying to find out where he is, as he previously did an amazing job on my vehicles. If you find him, please let me know.
Each time we recite our nation's Pledge of Allegiance, we state that our country and flag stand for liberty and justice for all. The NFL players who draw our attention to the lack of justice in this nation for some people by kneeling during the national anthem are not being disrespectful. Is it not patriotic to try to make this country a better place for all its citizens? Blind loyalty and willful ignorance of our nation's shortcomings are certainly not true patriotism. Go ahead, burn your Nikes and wait for the "likes" on your social media. The rest of us will be out here working to make our country a better place and one that lives up to the promise of justice for all.
In a recent Last Word, a writer indicated the "will of the majority of the people was not the outcome" of the presidential election. According to Factcheck.org, Hillary Clinton won 489 counties, and Donald Trump won 2,623 counties. Clinton was the "will of the people" in 15.7 percent of the counties, but Trump was the "will of the people" in 84.3 percent of counties. The Electoral College process works.
A recent Last Word included a response to the idea of basing presidential elections on the popular vote, as opposed to the Electoral College. The writer stated that those supporting this idea have forgotten about the states in the USA. No, states are not being forgotten. Far from it; two representatives from each state making up the Senate assure equality among states (as evidenced this week with Senate deliberations on the Supreme Court nominee). The Founding Fathers set up the Electoral College to provide stability for the national election process, recognizing the limitations of communication and voter access to the polls of the time. These limitations no longer exist. To provide equal representation for voters throughout all states, it's time to move to popular vote for national offices. Thank you.
The public has a right to know who is being arrested for committing a crime; that person might be neighbor. “Mean spirited” describes those who are committing the crimes. If you don’t want your name in the police blotter, then don’t commit the crime.
Thank you for including the blotter.
Moved to comment
I really do try and read other’s comments with an open mind, but I can no longer not take issue with two recent comments. One writer commented on the “despicable delay tactics” of Democratic senators regarding Judge Kavanaugh. I invite them to recall the Republicans not even giving Merrick Garland a hearing for a full year for absolutely no non-political reason. Second, another writer commented on the wonderful recent tax cut. A tax cut is appropriate when the government collects excess money and returns some to the taxpayers. That is not the current situation. This was simply borrowing money to give to taxpayers to buy their loyalty and running up the debt even further. It’s kind of like being broke, buying someone an expensive gift and then giving their grandchildren the bill.

Like new, full-size mattress and box spring. You pick up. Contact 757-369-3229 and leave a message if there’s no answer. Thank you.
Virginia DMV will provide the new driver ID beginning Oct. 1. This ID is not needed for flying until 2020. Since I have relatives who foolishly waited for six hours in North Carolina for a license, I am requesting those who do not immediately need one (going to Canada or Mexico) that you do not show up on the first or the first week. Please allow those whose licenses are about to expire to have a chance to get them without such long lines. Let's do this gradually so that the DMV can process us efficiently.
I’m on the road every morning in Williamsburg around Richmond Road and that sort of thing. And, folks — those who are on bicycles, those who are walking — for god sakes, get a flashlight, a reflector or something or you’re going to get run over. You have no regard whatsoever for a motor vehicle. Then, when you get hit, whose fault is it? The driver of the motor vehicle. Wrong.
Need an answer
I’m the person who did not get an answer/could not get an answer from Rep. Wittman because I don’t live in his district, so would the person who gets all these answers please ask him why he does not support the commercial hemp law in Virginia and the National Farm bill and pass it on to me. I would like to know. Thank you. He has an F by the Virginia Hemp Coalition for his support.
Fox News is a breath of fresh air in left-leaning media coverage of the president. Fact check: The president gets 90 percent bad press coverage all the time from CNN, ABC, NBC, etc. Stop watching Fox? Really?
The GOP has never trusted a woman to sit on the Senate Judicial Committee in their history.
If nothing else, the behavior of Judge Kavanaugh in front of the Judiciary Committee brings into question his temperament, and is his temperament enough to hold him back from the Supreme Court? The way he treated senators was absolutely appalling.
There was a recent editorial published in the Gazette bemoaning a perceived double standard in Washington surrounding the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh and the investigation of Rep. Keith Ellison. While I will not deny there may be double standards in some corners of the government, the case laid out by the author is simply not accurate. Brett Kavanaugh is undergoing the appointment process to the Supreme Court. Investigation into his background is the responsibility of the president of the United States. Rep. Ellison is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Currently, Rep. Susan Brooks, R-Indiana, controls this process. Clearly, elected Republicans are controlling the two processes. The assertion that Democrats are somehow protecting Ellison while persecuting Kavanaugh is flatly false.
Gee, let me guess, all three women accusing Judge Kavanagh are Democrats. A coincidence? I don’t think so. Once again, we see that Democrats will do anything to get their way, even getting women to perjure themselves.
If the Republicans use the kangaroo court procedure that they’re using now to see to it that Judge Kavanaugh gets confirmed to the Supreme Court and then later it comes out that he is, in fact, a serial sexual predator, that will ruin their credibility with the American people even more than the current president is doing. We can hold honest hearings in January when the Democrats get control of the Senate and House, we can get honest hearing and find the truth. And if the truth is he is a predator, than we can hold impeachment proceedings, something that will be a first in the history of the United States and something that will go down as part of the current president’s legacy.
If what these women said Judge Kavanagh did is criminal, then why didn’t they ever report it to the police in the jurisdiction that it supposedly happened? If they find out that any of these women are actually lying under oath, they should be jailed. The Democratic witch hunt continues to destroy this country.
It is amusing that the Republican whining about Ford versus Kavanaugh so closely approximates their handling of everything from global warming to the UN, to all things pertaining to Obama.
What a total waste of time that hearing was. After a whole day of listening to “he said, she said,” when all was said and done, our elected officials did as they always do: they voted their party. All Republicans voted Republican and all Democrats voted Democratic. And let this be a lesson to our young people: If you screw up as a teenager, make sure you don't waste your time trying to make something of yourself, it won't make any difference.
We have now entered a new era in our country’s history where the accused is responsible for disproving accusations, as our Democratic senators and news media have said. I always thought the rule was innocent until proven guilty, but I guess I was wrong. Whether or not this particular person merits appointment to the Supreme Court or not, the Democrats have now turned our justice system on its head. Today, this is about a Senate hearing. Tomorrow, it will be about a criminal charge. Think about this the next time you vote for a Democratic candidate.
“Let he that is without without sin cast the first stone.” What is happening in our nation's capital is a travesty of the likes of which I have not witnessed since the McCarthy era. Kavanaugh's career has been damaged irreparably due to a handful of senators who will not relent on destroying Trump’s administration at all cost — even to the extent of watching his closest family members witness what is happening to a man who should have the opportunity to sit on our highest court.
I ate at the new Antiquity Cafe in the Williamsburg Antique Mall, and it was delicious! The soup and sandwich were perfect, like eating at a fancy bistro. With this newly refurbished cafe and menu, going to the Antique mall has become an event. Try it out; you will be glad you did.
I just talked to the Premium Outlets on Richmond Road. I asked if they have a new bid coming up, and they have a really good one I think. If you give $10 (you do it by debit or credit card at the little customer service area) for breast cancer, then you get a little coupon book for stores that are participating in this for 25 percent off an item. So, it’s good, good and good for everybody.
Special thanks to owner Eric Christenson for providing a free, comfortable lounge downstairs at his healthful eating place, LOKAL, 445 Prince George St. At LOKAL, you can enjoy locally sourced ingredients, house-made artisan bread, smoothies, popsicles, coffee, beer and wines. Also try meditation or yoga in his practice room downstairs.
There is a fantastic jewelry shop at the Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center on John Tyler Highway by the name of MN Jeweler. The owner is incredibly talented in customizing your old pieces and giving them a new look. With many years working on this field, he also engraves, fixes, creates and puts together jewelry out of scrap gold or silver. His demeanor makes him a jewel as well.
Bravo to the Shakespeare Alive acting troupe for their entertaining performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Act V, at Williamsburg‘s 2nd Sunday Art & Music Festivals (weather permitting on Boundary Street in front of the Flower Cupboard). If you’d like to volunteer as an actor or behind the scenes for the rest of 2018 and in 2019, please text or call 703-946-0692.
Up in Washington
Trump said he has done more in two years, than any other president . Yes, he is the first president to be laughed at by all the world leaders at the UN.
On Sept. 25, President Trump gave a speech to the United Nations. It was only broadcast on NBC at 11 a.m. The news programs on Wednesday and Thursday were only covering poor Mr. Kavanaugh and his phony accusers. Yet, certainly a major speech by our president to the General Assembly of the United Nations discussing ideas important not only to the United States, but to the 200-plus countries of the United Nations should take precedence over a soap opera accusation. What has happened to our journalistic standards?
Trump said NAFTA was the worst trade deal ever . The only thing he changed was we are going to sell a little more milk to Canada and pay a little more for cars and parts from Mexico. What a joke.
Schumer and Feinstein, as Jews, should be ashamed of themselves for not supporting President Trump. President Trump and the Republican Party have proven to be stanch supporters of Israel, while Obama and the Democrats not so much. All Jewish Americans owe this administration their support or they should be considered a traitor to Israel.
