Four displaced in Merrimac Trail apartment fire

Fire crews from Williamsburg, James City and York counties responded to an apartment fire in the 200 block of Merrimac Trail Friday evening that displaced four people.

The first fire crew arrived on the scene at 6:10 p.m., according to a City of Williamsburg news release. The crew found smoke billowing from the ridge of the apartment building.

Fire crews entered the apartment’s kitchen and found fire that had spread to the apartment’s attic, the release said. The apartment was outfitted with operational smoke alarms that activated when crews arrived on the scene.

The flames were put under control at 6:21 p.m., according to the release. A total of nineteen firefighters from the City of Williamsburg Fire Department, York County Department of Fire and Life Safety and James City County Fire Department responded to the apartment.

Those displaced by the fire are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, the release said.

The fire remains under investigation, according to the release.
