New Year's Eve block party returns to Prince George Street

Amber Ox Public House and The Hound’s Tale are coming together for another year to host the second annual PG-500, a New Year’s Eve block party coming to downtown Williamsburg.

The 500 block of Prince George Street will be blocked off for the event, and festivities will include live music, outdoor seating in a heated tent, food and drinks at Amber Ox and the Hound’s Tale, and of course, a projection screen to watch the ball drop and champagne to ring in the new year.

Hound’s Tale and Aromas co-owner Michelle Sieling said the event was a huge success last year, and expects between 700 and 800 area residents to turn out for this year’s block party.

“The whole block is going to be blocked off, we’ll have a covered tent so regardless of what the weather is like, we’ll have heaters and tables outside for people to sit outside and enjoy the music,” she said. “It’s going to be a very nice set-up for families and friends to come down and celebrate New Year’s Eve.”

The fun kicks off at 7 p.m., where attendees can enjoy special New Year’s Eve food and drink menus at The Hound’s Tale and Amber Ox Public House or socialize outside under a heated tent, Sieling said. West Point-based band JMN will take the stage from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., she said, while Richmond-based party band Dance Candy will rock the night away from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Sieling said the inaugural PG-500 block party was inspired by First Night, an annual New Year’s Eve celebration that began in 1992 but was cancelled in 2017 due to a lack of city funding and a decrease in interest from volunteers to organize the event.

“Last year, (the organizers) decided that they were not going to continue with First Night, so that’s where Amber Ox and the Hound’s Tale got together and hosted a block party to fill that void down in the CW area,” she said.

Tickets come in two tiers, and can be purchased at Amber Ox, The Hound’s Tale, online or at the gate.

General admission tickets can be bought for $20 online or $25 at the gate, while $75 VIP tickets include two drink tickets, access to a VIP buffet section in Amber Ox and The Hound's Tale. Both tiers include access to the block party and a complimentary champagne toast at midnight.
