You can ring in the summer season with wine and beer tastings, food trucks, live music and more at A Taste Of New Kent, the county’s largest event of the year, when it returns to the Maidstone Village May 11.
The annual food and wine festival, hosted by the New Kent County Chamber of Commerce, will feature 12 wineries, a cidery and a beer truck offering tastings, along with five food trucks and a variety of local craft and art vendors, said Jessica Kuehl, director of marketing and media for the chamber.
Hampton Roads-based R&B, disco and mo-town band Slapnation will perform at the event.
“It has gotten bigger every year,” Kuehl said. “We have not raised the prices for tickets or anything, but there’s a whole lot of tastings coming to the Maidstone Village this year.”
Proceeds from A Taste of New Kent will support scholarships and grants offered by the county’s Chamber of Commerce to New Kent businesses, residents and recent graduates.
“The goal for the event is to bring people to New Kent and also to bring New Kent people together, and all of the money that we get from the event goes back to New Kent and into grants for businesses,” Kuehl said. “The Chamber of Commerce is all about supporting New Kent businesses in any way that we can. The money that we get goes into grants for these businesses, who invest back into the county.”
Although the event was previously held at the New Kent Winery, Kuehl said this year’s festival will return to the Maidstone Village in New Kent for the second time. Last year’s A Taste of New Kent festival drew 1,000 attendees, she said, but hopes the event will garner more interest this year with the help of nicer weather.
"A Taste of New Kent is the largest wine-tasting event in New Kent County," Don Hillbish, past chamber president and A Taste of New Kent chairman said in a news release.
Parking will be available at New Kent Middle School with a free shuttle service to the event, according to a release. Wine tastings are included with the event ticket, and beer and food will be available for purchase.
