Hampton Roads is the last area of the state to drop the broadcasts, according to a VDOT news release.
The move comes as VDOT plans to update the Hampton Roads district’s central control system, the release states. The system reports accident and incident information, controls the traffic camera system and sign advisories, as well as the 511 app and website.
In 2012, VDOT moved the station’s signal from 610 AM to 1680 AM, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
Motorists received updates on traffic conditions 24 hours a day through the signal. Now VDOT encourages motorists to check their route at 511virginia.org before they hit the road, according to the release. The department also urges motorists not to use their phones while they drive.
