While you may not be able to visit exotic locations such as Chile and New Zealand, you can sample wine from there. The Avalon Center will hold its fourth annual Wine Tour fundraiser on March 9.
Priscilla Caldwell, a spokeswoman with Avalon, said this is the organization’s only fundraising event.
"Once a year we have an opportunity to bring the community together and experience some good fellowship and good wine " said Emily Rossiter, chairwoman of the Board of Avalon.
Caldwell said the wine tour was started four years ago by Avalon’s board.
"(The board) was just looking for something elegant but low-key,” Caldwell said.
Tickets include unlimited wine tasting, hors-d'oeuvres and a glass to take home. While in the past wines have all been French, Caldwell said this year the tour will include selections from New Zealand, Australia and Chile.
The money raised from this event will go toward helping the victims of domestic violence and abuse Avalon serves.
“We can shelter up to about 50 people at any given time,” Caldwell said.
While Avalon was started in the late 1970s to serve battered women, Caldwell said today it serves people of all genders, as well as children.
Rossiter, who has been with Avalon for 13 years, said she has watched the organization grow in wonderful ways.
"Not only with women and children in our shelters, but with outreach services and with services for men who call in and need the support to turn their lives around following episodes of being victims of domestic violence or sexual assault," Rossiter said.
Caldwell said the organization has begun to reach out to local school systems to focus on teaching middle and high school students about healthy relationships.
“We do quite a bit of outreach in the community to teach about abuse and end the cycle,” Caldwell said.
"The goal is everyone in the community knows Avalon is here if they need it -- we are a safe, free and confidential place to get help."
