Police: York man ejected from car in Gloucester, dies from his injuries

A 22-year-old Yorktown man was killed after he was ejected from a car he was driving in Gloucester County Wednesday night, police said.

Virginia State Police troopers, Gloucester County Sheriff's Office deputies and medics responded to the crash, on Low Ground Road, north of Guinea Road, sShortly before 9:30 p.m., according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Investigators think the 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling north on Low Ground Road when the car ran off the road to the left, Anaya said. The driver overcorrected and struck a tree, she said.

The driver, identified as Matthew Gowen of the 800 block of Waterview Road in Yorktown, was not using a seat belt and was ejected upon impact, Anaya said.

Gowen suffered major injuries and was transported to Walter Reed Hospital where he later died, she said.

The investigation is ongoing, Anaya said. No additional information has been released.
