Yorktown woman dies in police custody

A Yorktown woman died while in the custody of Portsmouth Police Department. Virginia State Police is investigating the incident.

A woman was arrested by Portsmouth Police Department on an outstanding warrant at around 8:18 p.m. Thursday in Portsmouth. The woman was taken to the department’s headquarters, where she suffered a medical emergency, according to a Portsmouth Police Department news release.

The woman was later identified as Carmeita Jane Vangilder, 28, of Yorktown, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya said in an email Friday afternoon, adding that the department’s bureau of criminal investigations was conducting an investigation into the death.

The Portsmouth Police Department requested Virginia State Police conduct the investigation, according to its release.
