Mason beats Simonds in Senate seat primary

T. Monty Mason appears to have beaten Shelly A Simonds in Tuesday's primary for the 1st District Senate seat.

The Virginia Board of Elections unofficial results show Mason leading 3,498 to 2,589 with all 52 precincts reporting.

Mason, a Williamsburg-based Democrat, was first elected to the 93rd District General Assembly seat in 2013.

He was challenged by Simonds, a Newport News School Board member.

The special election for the seat will be held this November to coincide with the presidential race. Simonds, who has served on the Newport News School Board since 2012, unsuccessfully sought the 94th District General Assembly seat last November against incumbent Republican David Yancey.

The election this fall will fill the seat after the death this spring of Sen. John Miller, D-Newport News, who was known as a champion for education reform and transportation funding.
