On Jan. 8th, 1790, George Washington delivered our nation’s first State of the Union address. Speaking to the assembled Congress, in New York City’s Federal Hall, he announced all 13 states’ ratification of the Constitution and laid out plans to improve the United States’ credit and creditability. Both his task and that of Congress, he said, “must be ensuring to our fellow citizens the blessings which they have a right to expect from a free, efficient government.” Too bad that’s not how we operate today.
After seeing the photograph on the front page of Wednesday’s Gazette, I don’t understand how, when an amusement park and McMansions are visible from the James River, a transmission line will destroy the pristine views of the river.
I agree that “Viky Pedigo Elementary School” sounds like a great substitute for Rawls Byrd Elementary School’s name. Everything that she did to contribute to children’s lives and the general community would be honored by having her name put on this elementary school.
To the person talking about renaming the school: I have to admit I know nothing about Rawls Byrd other than what is written here, but we can’t just change everything because someone didn’t like what someone once said. I’m sure we’ve all said and done things that we may be ashamed of as we get older. But there is nothing perfect in the world. So maybe this person did other things that were commendable and is why he was honored by having his name on the school. So let’s move on and stop being so offended about everything. Because if you’re not perfect, you shouldn’t expect anyone else to be perfect or to have been perfect. Thank you.
I grew up Catholic. I attended catechism. I attended church regularly. I went to confession. My brothers went to Catholic schools, private schools. The backbone of the Catholic Church has always been marriage between a man and a woman, the sanctity of marriage. The backbone of the Catholic Church has always been against abortion, unless it’s in the life of the mother. And yet President Obama is welcoming the Pope to the White House as if they were aligned. They’re not aligned at all. What, because there’s some right issue on global warming? When we throw out the major issue, which is marriage, which is the abortion issue. It’s ridiculous. He welcomes him in as though “I stand for your major principles.” Really? I don’t think so.
The news was saying today, “Look at the Pope. He’s getting out of this big limousine and he’s riding in a little Fiat. Well, look at the enormous wealth in the Vatican. Religious paintings he’s going to keep; statues you want to keep. But there’s plenty of enormous jewels and Greek statues and Roman statues and paintings that aren’t necessarily religious. It would be like saying, “Well, look at Donald Trump. He rode a motorcycle.” Yeah? How about you look at his billions? It’s ridiculous. I don’t understand it. What austerity? There’s no austerity that the Vatican is exhibiting. On the other hand, he’s got the news saying, “Look how great what the Pope’s doing.” Really? Then why don’t you follow the Pope, the Catholic position, on marriage. How about, there’s no gay marriage? Or, do you just pick and choose that what you want to follow? It’s silly.

This is in response to someone looking for a small dental office that is local. I’m happy to recommend Williamsburg Dental Group at 106 Bacon Avenue in Williamsburg. Phone number 229-3099. We love it there. Adults and children. And they are receiving new patients.
I am responding to the person looking for a small dental office. I would like to recommend Tidewater Family Dentistry. That is in Newport News, but it’s very easy to get to, going 143. Dr. Owen and his whole staff cannot be kinder. I myself used to fear the dentist terribly, and this staff and this dentist are so lovely you just want to drop in for a visit. Their number is 877-6787.
I’m calling about VDOT and CSX repair job on Airport Road, crossing onto Route 60. They put a speed bump in by raising the rail crossing. It’s created traffic jams, backups and is going to cause an accident sooner or later because they end up blocking traffic on Richmond Road because they can’t get across the speed bump fast enough after the lights have turned red. They need to go back and relook at what they have done to this intersection. Or either just close it and put another route in. Thank you.
With all the talk about Williamsburg Crossing and the Williamsburg Shopping centers, is the City of Williamsburg overlooking what was supposed to be the crown jewel: High Street? You got an empty parking garage, lots of open acres, lots of vacant stores. Is it going out of business or is it sold or what’s going on with that? We’d love to find out. Thank you.
