Williamsburg man shot in Newport News

Newport News police are investigating after a Williamsburg man said he was shot while taking out the trash at his mother's house late last week, an official said. 

Police responded to a local hospital just after 12:30 p.m. Jan. 28 in reference to a person who arrived at the emergency room with a gunshot wound to his left leg, according to Master Police Officer B. J. Maynard. 

The 18-year-old Williamsburg man told officers he was shot in the area of North Chalice Court and Castle Drive, which is in North Newport News. He said he was walking back to his mother’s house from taking out the trash when he heard gunshots and realized he had been shot in the leg, according to Maynard. 

The man's mother drove him to the hospital, Maynard said. Police do not believe his injuries are life-threatening.
