Man, 22, dies after shooting at Astronomical Pancake House

A 22-year-old man died after accidentally shooting himself at a Williamsburg restaurant, according to Williamsburg Police.

Elias John Kokolis, of James City County, died on the way to the hospital after a shooting Friday afternoon, Williamsburg Police Major Greg Riley said.

According to police reports, city officers responded to a call about an shooting at Astronomical Pancake and Waffle House near the 1300 block of Richmond Road.

When officers arrived around 1:25 p.m., they found a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Riley said.

No one answered the phone at the pancake house Tuesday, and it appeared to be closed.

Authorities transported the body to the medical examiner's office in Richmond to determine what caused the man's death.

Icy road conditions from winter storm Jonas delayed transport and the office had been closed due to the weather, Riley said.

Police said the man was not alone when he was shot, and that they've talked to the witnesses.

No patrons were in the restaurant at the time of the shooting, Riley said.

Riley said although the shooting is under investigation, police don't have any reason to suspect foul play.

“We were told the victim was handling a firearm and didn't have a lot of experience with one,” he said.

This is the city's first shooting and only fatal shooting in 2016.
