CIAO is still kicking in the Last Word, April 9

Lawn bowling

The lawn bowling green behind the Williamsburg Inn opened to the public last week for the 50th and last time. The green is being closed in May to make room for a golfing facility. This will end 60 years of CW lawn bowling, a Williamsburg tradition that dates to the colonial era. Many were disappointed to hear the news. We were a preferred venue for out-of-town bowlers who came here frequently to bowl in tournaments. The Williamsburg Inn Lawn Bowling Club is seeking alternatives but the Williamsburg green is irreplaceable. It will be missed.

Last Thursday was the opening day for the Williamsburg Lawn Bowling Club. Fifty years on the green under this from Colonial Williamsburg was, "You're fired!" Shame on them for getting rid of a very good colonial pastime sport.

Alive and well

CIAO, the Italian Club of Williamsburg, is alive and well and entering its 28th year. As the club president, I can assure everyone that the person who stated in Saturday's Last Word that CIAO has been disbanded is misinformed and incorrect. For information on CIAO (the Colonial Italian American Organization), please visit our website at www.ciao-williamsburg.org or send an email to socialclub@ciao-williamsburg.org.

Anyone interested in finding a competent, reliable and friendly company to help you with computer issues, or buying a computer, I highly recommend Computer Concepts on Center Street in New Town. Not being a techie myself, they have been invaluable to me. I have just signed up for lessons for my new MacBook Air. Lessons are also available for PCs.

I have used Booth's Upholstery in Gloucester a few times. They will pick up and deliver when done. Very professional. (804) 693-5636.

Spring is here, and before we start maintaining our yards, we should maintain our equipment. I would like to highly recommend Glen Ayres for servicing lawn mowers, blowers, and trimmers. He came to our house (at the time promised), and did an excellent job cleaning, sharpening, balancing, leveling, and lubricating all my lawn equipment, and all at a very reasonable rate. Glen can be reached at 757-784-0774.

For the person looking for a vet in Toano: My dogs have been cared for by Doc Murphie for 35 years and now he has instilled in his son, Dr. Rob, that same caring attitude at Anderson's Corner Animal Hospital where both practice. Doc has operated on our pups with a skillful hand but has sent us to other doctors when he thought it prudent. The office may be state of the art but the care our new puppy Finn receives is "old timey."

Name changes

Judging a man's past? Can we pick George Washington? No, he owned slaves. How about Jefferson? No he owned slaves. How about Lincoln? No, he murdered and starved women and children in the last year of the civil war. How about Mr. King? No, he has a criminal record. Tiger Force recon 1/327th killed women and children, so we can't name the school after any US Green Berets right? Matthew 7: Do not judge less you be judged.

In the '60s, it might have seemed appropriate to name a school after a "retired" superintendent. But perpetuating a legacy of social injustice was wrong. A name change for Rawls Byrd Elementary School is long overdue. Lafayette Jones deserves support from white and black members of the community.

Just wondering

It would be great if one of the local newspapers could do a little old-fashioned investigative reporting to determine what has happened to the construction of the Sam's Club at the Marquis Shopping Center and what the future might hold for the abandoned JC Penney building. Oh, and inquiring minds would like to know if there are any plans for the abandoned Ukrop's Grocery store at the other end of Rt. 199.

Hummingbirds

No need to guess when Hummingbirds will arrive; follow their movement north on the map at http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html

Looking for ...

A formerly homeless individual, working with the Williamsburg Charity Group, has just found housing is looking for help with bedroom furniture and a dinette set. The number that you can reach her at—Darlene is her name— is 757-933-4696.

Does anyone know of a company or an individual that can do flagstone in the walkway, entrance to the home and also break work? Please call and leave a message at 757-887-5010.

Does anyone know who, where and dates of documents shredding in this area?

Circular complaint

I am writing to register a complaint about the person who was complaining about the complainers. The world is an imperfect place and if someone doesn't complain, then how are we going to know what the rest of us should complain about? And before you complain about my complaining about your complaints about all the complaining, please abstain from explaining your complaining any further; it's giving me a migraine.

Free to you

Free to a church, charity or non-profit group. I have two Kodak Carousel 35mm slide projectors with tray and lamp. One is a Model 600 and the other is a Model AF2. Contact: sebring8@cox.net

Two Adirondack outdoor wooden chairs are available for you to pick up. They were professionally built out of wood and have weathered nicely over the years. They need a little wood filler and a fresh coat of paint. calvert55@cox.net

Presidential politics

What is it about President Obama that makes some Last Word callers lose every bit of sense they ought to have? One wanted him to drop a historic foreign policy breakthrough to fly to Belgium and do - what? Another wants him impea

ched and replaced with a Republican president. Senators claim they can't even confirm a Supreme Court justice nominated by the popularly elected President. Now this person wants not just Barack Obama but Vice President Joe Biden removed from office to be replaced by Paul Ryan, the bottom half of the slate that was defeated in the 2012 election. What are they thinking?

The budget surpluses that we enjoyed from 1998 to 2001 stemmed from a dramatic surge in federal revenues, mainly personal income taxes. In 1993, Bill Clinton undid some of the Reagan tax cuts for the wealthy. In fiscal 2000, the surplus peaked at $237 billion, and it remained a robust $128 billion in fiscal 2001 (Clinton's last budget year). Newt Gingrich resigned Jan. 3, 1999.

I know it is the right of a news publication to express opinions about presidential candidates. However, I think the last three cartoons demeaning and degrading Donald Trump are an affront to your readers' dignity and intellect. Whether a supporter or not, this newspaper can publish amusing cartoons about all the candidates while maintaining the quality of your publication.

Staying active

In the April 2nd issue: "Staying active in group settings key to longevity if you want to live longer after retirement." So true but difficult. The one-room Senior Center is not organized to make the best use of the space available. Those making the decisions separate the mah-jong players from bridge players when the room is set-up to handle all at one time. Line dancers are required to pay dues yet are not scheduled to use rec center large spaces. These are some of the problems that never get addressed.

State inspections

Yes, I'm a state inspector, and people show up all the time on the last day of the month and think you can work miracles to get them done. I think the state should pass a law that if you're late, you pay a late fee. Thank you.

Spring beauty

I want to say how beautiful the tulips are in front of the Church of God on Longhill Road.

Manage the budget

Yes, this county administrator, Bryan Hill, needs to understand this is not an urban area where we raise taxes every year and grow government every year. If he wants to do that, he should go back to a metropolitan area, a more urban area. One of the appeals of this area is that we have control of our government—our government doesn't control us. Manage your budget wisely.

Thank you

Thanks to Dominion Virginia Power for getting our electricity back. The electricity went out about 1 a.m. early Sunday morning in Carver Gardens. By 8 o'clock, the dedicated workers had everything working. Indeed, it was a best praise to all concerned. Thank you very much.

I want to thank a Brenda and a Gloria from Yankee Candle for outstanding customer service. They went out of their way to find everything that we needed, and especially the gentleman that is in Wax Works who did an outstanding job for the young children. I want to thank these three at Yankee Candle.

Many thanks to the two nurses who were kind enough to help my mother and me after she fell in the parking lot recently. They ran out of the building, brought gauze and band aids, and helped get her in the car so we could go to Urgent Care. Thanks for your kindness.

Thank you so much to Tidewater Physical Therapy in Norge. Karen is so kind and welcoming when you walk in the front door, and Jessie, Liz and Kate are always so very kind and helpful, and they all played a part in my recovery. I am grateful.

No littering

There are a lot of roads in Williamsburg and James City County that have litter. People are inconsiderate of others and have a lack of respect for nature. I grew up when there was a TV commercial of a Native American looking around at the litter on his land and he had a tear running down his face. It was the most powerful commercial! It should be aired on TV now to educate the public.

Flag etiquette

I do not agree with the person who said only the American flag flies when at half-staff. When the American flag is flown at half-staff, non-national flags should also be flown at half-staff. 4 U.S. Flag Code, Section 7 (f).

Somewhere to eat

What a great idea it was to have the Marquis shopping mall in York County. But why doesn't it have a single place to eat? Great location: on 199 near Water Country, Busch Gardens, I-64 East. The Marquis has great potential. Nobody wants to shop on an empty stomach...Have at least a coffee shop, please! What a terrible impression for the tourists.

Rise to the occasion

I went to a graveside service recently, and I was so surprised to see some people wearing shorts, tee shirts and flip flops. I'm old fashioned and I know times have changed, but come on, people, let's show some respect in these types of situations. The majority of the people were dressed up and looked very nice. It makes you wonder what people in later generations will be like when they are learning from today's generation.

Saying a prayer

May God bless Officer Dermyer's family. Chad made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and protection. But why has no one investigated and reported how the murderer, James Brown III, was free, walking our streets, and not locked away in an Illinois prison where he belonged?

Bridge class

For those people who are interested in starting a daytime beginner/refresher bridge class, I have scheduled an initial meeting on Tuesday, April 19, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church which is located at 7801 Church Lane, Toano, VA. 23168 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. At this meeting, we can discuss future meeting locations and times. If you have any questions, you can call me on my cell phone at 757-869-6310.

Grammar police

The English Bible as we know it was translated from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. The first known partial translation into English was about 639 AD. If you look at the title page of the King James translation of the Bible, you would have noticed that it was translated from Latin into English in 1611 AD (four years after the founding of Jamestowne).

I have read many funny things in the Last Word, but the following line in this week's response under the title the "Grammar police" will always be on my top five list and I quote, "There's a reason why the Bible was written in English. It is literally the Word of God!" The Bible was not available in English until the 16th century, and then by a variety of translators. As far as we know Jesus did not speak English, nor did any of his disciples.

The Bible was written in English, which is, the writer of "Grammar police" apparently believes, God's first language? It was written in Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament) translated into Latin by the early Church, and began to appear in modern English translations in the Sixteenth Century.
