Last Word on snow cones, Sept. 21

Historical marker

It's nice that the state historical society placed a marker on Route 60 for the Norge station. It's a shame they put in behind the bushes at the Sentara lab there so you can't see it.

Teacher pay

An additional comment on teacher pay: Remember, a teaching job is not a nine to five, Monday to Friday job. Teachers have to spend their evenings and weekends grading papers and preparing lesson plans. Additionally, in order to keep their certification up, they have to constantly take classes to upgrade their education. Those are either done in summer school or online, which takes almost as much time as grading papers every week. Teachers are underpaid for what they do.

The subject is teacher pay. To the person who complained about the "forced work stoppages" imposed during the school year: You knew what the job requirements were when you agreed to accept the position, so that dog won't hunt. Thank you.

Filling the void

The Queen Anne is being replaced by a snow cone place. Really? The Queen Anne provided a variety of good lunches plus ice cream desserts. No offense to the new proprietor, but serving a variety of snow cones just doesn't fill the void created by the loss of the Queen Anne in that spot. Thank you.

Group home

It is despicable that the Newport News/Hampton Mental Health Agency, Gateway Homes and Middleburg Bank & Trust would sneak the establishment of a Level 2 Group Homes composed of individuals who have been declared mentally ill with some or all having committed crimes. This is a residential community 500 ft. from a k-12 school. All this done with absolutely no transparency with our city or the surrounding neighborhoods. Remove it immediately.

I may be a voice in the wilderness. I fully understand the concern about the group home; however, I have a mentally ill brother in a group home in Maryland. In fact, the company that runs the homes has three homes in a lovely neighborhood near an elementary school. The residents are not violent, are managed very well and pose no threat to those nearby. I don't know who the residents will be for the proposed home here, but I would hope that people would become better informed before they continue to foster the fears we all have about the phrase "mentally ill." I understand that this is a difficult social and political concern, but I would want to hear more compassion than what I am reading.

Williamsburg takes great pains limiting the number of unrelated people in single-family dwellings, but then allows a "group home" with up to eight unrelated people to exist in a single-family neighborhood by declaring them a "family." Residents surrounding the proposed group home at 101 Woodmere Drive are understandably confused. Editor's note: State, not city, law allows the placement of the home in the neighborhood.

Summer Breeze

Hello to whoever picks the bands for Summer Breeze concerts on D.o.G. Street. Please bring back Slapnation And Tidewater Dr. bands! I can understand you wanted to give the local bands a chance to perform, but really?! I decided I would go to all the concerts before I commented. I look forward to these concerts. The first band was OK, but it was downhill after that. So, I had to go to Port Warwick for a couple performances; what a bummer to have to go that far when I am a Williamsburg resident. So, don't disappointment next year.

To the person looking for a plumber and an electrician: Scott Carter from Carter Plumbing is fantastic. He is knowledgeable and his prices are fair, 220-6289. Kevin from K&K Electrical is the best around. His number is 903-2565.

This is in reply to posts about knife and scissor sharpening. We recently used the knife and scissor sharpening services of Goodbye Dull Knives and are extremely pleased. Their prices are very reasonable and their service was quick. Their number is 804-201-3639 and email goodbyedullknives@gmail.com. Thank you.

A/C stopped working during heat spell. Called a local HVAC company and the repair person recommended an entirely new unit, at a cost of over $6,500. Wanting a second opinion, I called Williamsburg Heating and Air Conditioning. Bernie comes over, three times, to diagnose the problem. A/C needed two parts at a cost of $150, plus installation. Saved over $6,000. Thanks, Bernie, my superhero. Choose wisely.

I went to the farmers' market on Ironbound Road, which is not far from the Jamestown Road, for the first time this week. The vegetables were very nice, and I loved their fall beet salad, that you keep in the refrigerator. I definitely will go back.

To the person looking for someone to grout their bathroom or their shower: Contact Timothy Knight from Knight Painting and Wallcoverings, 757-378-2493. I'm a very satisfied customer and Mr. Knight is very meticulous and I'm sure he can do the grouting, no matter where it is. Thank you.

School prank

Does anyone know if the kids involved with the Hornsby Middle school prank were officially charged by the police? Last article I could find in the Gazette stated they were going to press felony charges but nothing after that. Were they charged by police or just punished by the school?

McDonnell case

To the individual commenting about Bob McDonnell getting off "scot-free" because he is "white": This is why racism is alive, well and getting strong again.

Yes, I just read the Gazette this morning, and I that a person said that if it was Jesse Jackson, he would be locked up. Well, I am a black person also, and I do not believe that. Bob McDonnell was innocent for what he did. If that's the case, then you should lock up the Clintons and all the other ones who are doing—you know, going from a top government on down! It's ridiculous. You know what? No wonder there's so much racial discrimination in this country. Thank you.

Kudos

Kudos to Dr. Joseph Habibi of the TPMG medical group. We got in immediately, and the doctor was knowledgeable, personable and accommodating, fully explaining everything and answering all questions. Thank you from an appreciative patient.

Save the Bay

Eat less meat, help save the Chesapeake Bay. Pets also add to CO2 and nitrogen emissions, especially large dogs. Pets eat meat and vegetables just like humans. Farm machinery is used to raise their food. Other machinery is used to process their food and take it to market. Cars are used to pick up food and take pets to the vet. Dogs emit waste and their food packaging must be recycled. So keep fewer pets and help save the Chesapeake Bay.

MAPS tests

Parents need to be told that their middle school children are taking separate math and reading tests at the beginning, middle and end of this school year that take another two days each to take. This is time that is being taken away from actual education. The results do not affect your child. Even the test administrators don't know the purpose for the tests. Ask your school what the new MAPS test is all about.

Enough litter!

George Beahm's September 14th Letter to the Editor about littering the highways is spot on! My husband and I were recently in Texas and drove hundreds of miles without seeing any litter on the roadways. Their secret was a heavy fine for littering the highway! I would like to see, not just Williamsburg/James City County prosecuting offenders, but the entire state of Virginia!

Retirement homes

Contractors, Developers: Someone addressed this problem not long ago. It is an issue, as more people here retire and others retire and move here. We don't need large two-story homes with stairs and extra rooms anymore. Please build some houses in this area for the Baby Boomers who are downsizing and need one-floor ranch style homes that don't cost a bundle and are not right on top of one another. We need a little more space between for privacy and flowers. Thank you.

Cat problems

To the person who says that they think you're overreacting when you talk about the stench from the cats: You have definitely gone nose blind. You know, when cats use your yard as a litter box, you can't clean that up and that stench is there. The person who called in to complain about this—they're not exaggerating. If you own a cat, then you really should keep it indoors. People buy cats and they want other people to be responsible for taking care and cleaning up after that cat. All they do is feed the cat. And I've lived with it, and it's absolutely horrible.

To the person who responded to my letter regarding free roaming cats: Not only do I believe cats are free roaming, I know they are according to the law. I am a rescuer and know the rules. I must say I found your response rather idiotic comparing a mountain lion to cats. We are talking neighborhoods here, not jungles. I think you need to find some kindness in your soul, not hatred.

I totally agree with the post about keeping cats out of others' yards. I'm a cat owner. I keep my cats totally inside. Cats live longer and are safer inside. Many shelters have contracts that required adopted cats to be kept inside. We had a neighbor's cat go under our house and tear out all the insulation in the winter. Plus, the urine odor was horrific! Anyone who lets their cats roam outside is an irresponsible pet owner.

Protected speech

To the person that said Colin Kaepernick was not registered to vote: How do you know? In many states if you are a celebrity, first responder, government official or in the military, you can get your name, address, and other personal information blocked from public records (DMV, voter information, even property tax records) for security/safety concerns. So just because you cannot find his voter registration on the almighty Internet does not mean he does not vote. Do you vote in every election?

Men vs. boys

Recently, I had a chance to hear a group of several young beautiful ladies talking. And one of them said, "It's very simple to tell the men from the boys." And all the girls gathered closely and said, "How's that?" She said, "The boys walk around with their pants down." Have a blessed day.

Kingsmill security

I suppose I can understand the security screening I endure whenever visiting friends at Kingsmill — it's important for the Kingsmill residents to feel protected from the notoriously dangerous citizens of Williamsburg. But can you even imagine how long it would take them to clear me if I had shot four people in a premeditated presidential assassination attempt? The mind boggles.

Looking for ...

FISH, our local organization which provides food and clothing to local people in need, always has a need for food donations and at present has a severe shortage of paper grocery bags. Donations can be dropped off at the community service resource center on Waller Mill Road.

If you purchased a cream-colored table with two mauve colored swivel chairs and would like to have the other two chairs, please email 11404angels@gmail.com. The used furniture store would not take them. Thank you.
