CW lighting

I must admit I was not in support of lighting the historic area. However, it was done most tastefully and looks very nice. My concern, however, is in how this will actually bring guests into the area when the public restrooms are closed at such an early hour, and when they are open they smell of urine. Even the changing tables are filthy. It's time to spend some money on completely renovating all public restrooms in the historic area so they are every bit as nice and clean as those at the Visitor's Center, even if that means shutting those lights off in the meantime, to pay for it. Guests avoid these restrooms at all costs, even when they are open. I've known people to leave the area because they are not open and/or because the smell is so disgusting.

Bumblebees

The J Blaine Blayton Elementary 5th Annual Walk of the Bumblebees walkathon on Oct. 9 was a big success due to the giving spirit of many JBB families. The kids had a ton of fun walking, jogging, skipping, and dancing their way around the bus loop. The sun was shining and a fall breeze was blowing. We are thankful for the generosity of our business neighbors, including Bounce House, Glass Dynamics, Iron Bound Gym, Pediatric Dental Specialists, Pete's Heating and A/C, Whitmore Chevrolet, Williamsburg Eye Care, Crow's Garage, Custom Builder Supply Co, Sylvan, Kohl's, Sugar and Spice Consignment, Francesco's, Virginia Living Museum, Paul's Deli, School Crossing, The Mariners Museum, Great Wolf Lodge, Parks Orthodontics, CNU Athletics Department, Traditional Golf Properties, Seven-Eleven, Norfolk Admirals Hockey, and Powerhouse Dance. The JBB PTA looks forward to returning the funds raised to the classroom and enhancing the learning experience of every JBB student.

Guns

The police have been ineffective in preventing shootings at school and movie theaters. So, just maybe if there were people with legal canceled weapons permit on site they might have been able to stop the carnage. Furthermore, criminals will always find a way to obtain their weapons; to combat this good citizens must be able to protect themselves.

Reply to store owner who would call 911 if a customer was in the store with a firearm. Are you sure this is not a police investigator or off duty police officer? Better to put sign on door that you will call 911 if anyone enters with a firearm. Declare a gun free zone. Makes it easier for the bad guys to act.

To the person blaming the NRA for the shooting — this little boy shot a little girl — that is so sad. If there's a group of people that are to blame for children and people killing each other, it has more to do with parents and upbringing. It's not the rifle association. Oh, my goodness, at 62. I was born with guns in the house. It was normal. But we were raised respecting life, and we have become a country/society that doesn't respect life, whether it's in utero or it's born. This is not the NRA. This is about morals and being taught to respect that every life matters. Every life matters. And this has to be taught, and it is taught first at home.

Well done

Congratulations to Colonial Williamsburg and Clark Taggert and his flower arranging group. The yellow calla lilies in the soft green window boxes are just beautiful, a stunning look as you walk in the front door of the Inn. Because it's different? So what. It's beautiful. We need to have different arrangements. That's the only way we can move forward—that's progress. Let's not hang on too long to the past, but bring the past up with us to the present.

Kudos to the Ladies who do the framing at the Williamsburg Pottery. They are fast, efficient, and do a terrific job. If an item isn't going to be ready when they promise, they will call and let you know about the delay. I took a print in at 1:30 today to have the glass replaced with non-glare. It was finished and ready for pick-up by 3:00. Amazing!

Kudos to the person who commented about the need for more 'Bus Shelters.' It truly is a shame to have to wait in the pouring rain or strong wind for the bus. I have used public transportation since 1992. I used the bus for transportation to/from work every day. I was diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year and neither of the two stops I need to use for my treatments has any shelter or seating. Getting to Riverside Doctors Hospital, you have to get off the stop up the road and walk the highway there. The lack of covered stops more than likely hinders more riders for the bus. The need to re-think some of the locations a thought.

Ronald Davis did some upholstery for me and did a fantastic job and his prices are reasonable. His telephone number is 345-1929. I recommend him highly. Thank you.

Yes, this is for the lady who used defensive driving — prevented an accident today because I pulled out in front of her. I just want to let her know how sorry I am. She was on Ironbound Road and I was coming out of Watford Lane. They have three or four accidents a week at that same spot, because there's a blind spot. We've been trying to get a traffic light put there, and hopefully, the Highway Department will one day put one there because there's too many accidents and too many near misses. I'd just like to apologize to you, say I'm sorry. No way in the world if I had seen you, I'd have pulled out in front of you, but I thank you for being a good defensive driver and avoiding an accident. Thanks again.

I would highly recommend the Rosser optical shop. It's the only independently owned optical shop in Williamsburg. It's at 150 Strawberry Plains Road. This means great service at lower prices for all of us who need glasses. Thank you.

Great musical review by John Shulson. Please, Gazette, let's complement his work by having our local theatrical productions reviewed. We're still holding out hope that the Gazette will not discontinue this feature.

My dentist of over 20 years is Gisela Fashing, DDS. My entire family goes to her and everyone likes her. She is truly exceptional! She treats every patient and her staff as though they were her family. I like that she gives patients a choice about which options to pursue and offers guidance and education to help select the best treatment. Most of her staff have been there for many years and all work together well. Elaine, the dental assistant, is as thorough and gentle as they come. Dr. Fashing has just added two new young dentists to her practice (one is her daughter) and they are a great addition. If you are looking for someone with excellent professional skills and a kind heart, Dr. Fashing is the one for you. 757-229-8991, in McLaws Circle.

To the nice gentleman at Panera, that was willing to step out of line to personally drive an older gentleman who was confused on directions to his destination! That was so incredibly kind of you! Not many would give up their time to help a stranger! Bless you!

I have been seeing Dr. Christopher Bosco at BioHarmony Rejuvenation Center in New Town for back problems and spinal stenosis. I have gotten great results and I highly recommend Dr. Bosco. I also had a lesion on my back, and since seeing Dr. Bosco, my last MRI showed the lesion as getting smaller.

Just want to say a big thank you to Come Home Clean for doing a superb job every time you visit. I have been using their services for over a year now and am very happy with their company and employees. They are a small residential cleaning company, very flexible and personal service. I highly recommend trying this company 757-715-5126. I have had great comments for them since I changed from one of the larger impersonal cleaning companies last year.

Just want to share a story about Arborista Tree Service. In short, the experience was incredibly impressive. Christie and her team were highly productive, accurate, and safe. The fee was the most reasonable we researched (of three competing tree removal services), and she's an absolute expert at identifying troublesome trees. I recommend Arborista for Williamsburg area tree removal services!

Recruiting

I think it is funny when private schools recruit players from public schools. One private school has plenty new players from public schools. Terrible.

Stryker building

Congratulations, Williamsburg residents, your new Stryker building is something the committee will be proud of. Way to go! I can hardly wait to see it completed.

Yes, in regards to the Stryker building—all these people in Williamsburg that don't like it. In the last comment before, they said Williamsburg was a bunch of whiners. Hey, look at the Muscarelle Museum and see the kind of comments in the archives you can get up there, you know, for the next museum. Later.

VA hospital

In Palo Alto, California, there's a VA hospital, and the Federal Government's spending money on the VA hospital. And you might say, "Yeah! Finally they're going to do something for the veterans!" Wrong answer. They spent $483,000 on a rock sculpture. Here's the worst part: It's all layered into cubes, and where is it? Outside the Mental Health Center, Department of Veteran Affairs. That alone ought to make you mentally imbalanced to look at the ugly thing. They've also spent in Palo Alto millions on art and consulting fees. Nothing to do with helping our sick and wounded veterans. This is why people are angry.

Bumper stickers

To the writer who wrote, "How can anyone still have an Obama bumper sticker on their vehicle?": The answer is that's it's a little bitty called "choice," and for that same reason you see people still trudging around with the last Republican opponent sticker on their car as well. Thank you. Have a good day.

Free to you

Free: Assorted lengths of scrap lumber pieces. Suitable for wooden craft projects, birdhouse building, etc. Call 258-3635 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Just asking

Do we know yet what other stores are slated to join Harris Teeter?

Divorce court

Yes, I would like to know why, when you go into a divorce court, it's the mother that gets custody of the child; why, as soon as they get custody, the mother allows the younger child's boyfriend to move in and live with them, an underage girl, and the father tries to do something about it and nothing can be done. It's ridiculous. What can you do as a parent when you don't think your child should be living with a boyfriend?

Chicago

Yes, Thirty individuals killed during the month of September in Chicago — that equals like one a day, and they're saying that they were mostly young black men. What is our President doing in Chicago? How many times has he been in Chicago to bring this to light about the extreme killings that are going on in Chicago? Could someone please answer that question? Thank you.

Yes, our President was on the television just now to speak on the Afghan war situation and his plans, which are good and I agree with. And he commented that this year there were 25 Americans killed in Afghanistan. I heard yesterday there were 30 killed in the city of Chicago, his hometown. So can one explain to me how Chicago, which is not in a war zone—or I guess it is, if they're killing 30 people—and Afghanistan where there's soldiers with guns going on only killed 25 in we'll say, nine months, benefit of the doubt. Just kind of wondering. There's a lot of curious figures out there. Can someone help me?

Help needed

I need someone to run a water line to a refrigerator for a reasonable price for senior citizen/ disabled person. Please put the name in the Last Word. The number is 757-565-1730. Thank you.

I am inquiring about a handyman who would be able to reinstall a storm window. I had removed the broken window and replaced the glass but was unable to get the window back into the outer frame. I am willing to pay a reasonable fee. Please leave your reference/number in the Last Word. Thank you.

I am in need of someone to do some small siding repairs on our house. There have been several names mentioned in the Last Word, but unfortunately, I have lost them. I would appreciate further recommendations. Thank you very much.

Yes, does anybody have a twin bed to donate? If you do, could you give me a call at 757-250-3865. Thank you.

Rules of the road

Note to the person on the red scooter with the Dayglo lime helmet on: Those octagonal red signs at intersections mean you stop. Just because you've only got two wheels that doesn't mean you have to ignore traffic laws. Unfortunately, I didn't get your license number so I can't call the state police.

Just for laughs

We think that veterans have a funny side, so much that we want to give them a stage to show us. On Oct. 24th, VFW Post 4639 at 106 Jesters Lane will host a Comedy Show. Starting at 7pm, the post is inviting the public to the Left, Right, Laugh Comedy Show Fundraiser. All funds raised will go to help local veterans. The idea was created when local veterans who participated in the Armed Services Arts Partnership Comedy Boot camp thought that raising some needed funds for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and providing a stage for military veteran comedians was a great idea. We hope the public comes out to laugh, meet local veterans, and just have a great time!

Climate change

Recent comment on "Climate Change" by Dr. Patrick Moore, one of the founders of Greenpeace: "As I have stated on many occasions, there is no definitive scientific proof, through real-world observation, that carbon dioxide is responsible for any of the slight warming of the global climate that has occurred during the past 500 years, since the peak of the Little Ice Age. If there were such a proof through testing and replication, it would have been written down for all to see."

Honor bestowed

A reader, who must not have been paying attention, wanted to know why the young men who subdued the terrorist on a French train hadn't been invited to the White House to be honored by President Obama. That happened on Sept. 17th when the President met with them in the Oval Office and praised their courage and quick thinking, saying they "represent the very best of America." The airman was promoted and awarded the Purple Heart and Airman's Medal, the National Guardsman received the Soldier's Medal, and the civilian received a civilian award.

To the Last Word writer of 10/14/15: The attempt to take a swipe at President Obama shows they haven't been following the news. The President had the three American heroes to the White House on Sept. 17th.

The person who said that President Obama failed to have the three American heroes, who stopped the shooter in France, at the White House was mistaken. The President had them at the White House on Sept. 17th. It made national news on TV and in many papers, just perhaps not in the Virginia Gazette which does a fine job with local news.

First the President was condemned for not having honored the young men who brought down the terrorist on a train in France, when, in fact, one of the men was in the military hospital in Germany at the time. Now someone doesn't understand why the President still hasn't honored them when he already did, several weeks ago. It helps to get your news from more than one source.

Scoreboard

I don't understand why teams pay hundreds of dollars to play softball in spring and hundreds more to play fall ball and yet the scoreboard on field 3 hasn't worked in a long time?! Come on Quarterpath Park and get it together! Not to mention the fields need work too!

Zip codes

We now have many zip codes in the Williamsburg area. The 9-digit ZIP is important when there are mistakes in other parts of the address, because it routes the letter to your carrier, who knows the route and can probably guess the correct house. The post office once gave me a list of all local zip codes and the neighborhoods they cover. You should all ask for a copy.

Byway or highway

This is for all the people that have moved here from up north. Up north, on a two-lane road ... such as Route 60, yeah, it's a highway. In Virginia, Route 60 is a byway. Both lanes are 45 miles an hour. You people don't quit driving so close, you're going to be in my trunk because I'm going to slam on the brakes. My car has 196,000 miles on it, and I have money to buy a new one, and I'd just love to have you in my trunk so I could grab you and yank you out of my car for drivin' like an idiot.

Magazines

If anyone has any Country French back magazines, former issues they would like to donate for a school teacher's project, please call 784-8805, and I'd be glad to pick them up. Thank you. [Called twice.]

Sales tax

Rather than raising the real estate tax, why doesn't the State of Virginia raise their sales tax so everybody has to pay? Just because I'm a property owner doesn't mean that I should have to pay more taxes than someone who rents a property. They still have kids that go to school, they use the road, and it's not really fair to people, particularly senior citizens who are on a limited income, that their real estate taxes are being raised. Raise it a half percent! That's going to bring in more money or even a percent than the real estate tax. Because everybody's homes have gone down in value and we've never recovered since 2007. Houses in my area are selling for far less than what people paid for them.

Found her!

To the person looking for Becky Jenkins that used to work at Cindy's Classic Cuts: She's working at Virtue Salon on Bulifants Blvd. The number is 804-832-2645.

Afternoon activities

Why has the National Park Service greatly reduced Yorktown Day activities this year? There are no afternoon activities scheduled. Very sad that such a significant event as the 1781 victory at Yorktown can't be better commemorated.

Pay at CW

As reported in CW's IRS Form 1099 for 2013 (the most recent available to the public), compensation for CW's 14 highest paid executives totaled $4,499,055. Of this amount, compensation for CW's president was $724,358. (But then, he did report working 65 hours per week.) Let's hope that ice skating rinks, lighted buildings, and cuddly dogs will increase visitation. However, given the notoriously low wages paid CW's "front-line" folks — the very folks who "are CW" in the eyes of visitors -- let's also hope that CW's Board of Trustees is taking a hard look at executive compensation. Just sayin'.
