Fair comment and freedom of the press are important safeguards to democracy enshrined in the Constitution. Political cartoons have a role to play and can often make incisive points in a humorous way that captures the attention of the public who might overlook a long article.
However, the recent “Retired in Williamsburg” panel, which states that the character sent a “Happy President’s Day” card to Hillary Clinton, doesn’t have a point. It’s just mean-spirited and contributes to the divisiveness that is plaguing this nation. The Virginia Gazette should expect more from its contributors.
