Contradictions and confusion about the wall

Here are the actual facts about the proposed border wall with Mexico:

» Most illegal people in the United States came in legally, through existing legal points of entry and have overstayed their visas.

» Most drugs come into our country hidden in cars and trucks coming through legal points of entry or via the post office.

» The numbers of illegal people crossing into the USA through open desert areas has been steadily going down, year over year for the last five years.

» To build a wall will require that our government buy land from property owners along the border. This will be a very long process of negotiating and court fights to acquire via eminent domain. Trump will be long gone before the construction can even start in many areas. If a wall is so necessary we will not have it for many years.

» Many areas along the border because of water or very uneven terrain cannot physically support a wall.

» At the most popular points of entry we already have a wall.

» Adding more resources to enforcing our exist laws would be a positive step

» Our Border Patrol has stated: if we allocate $300 million to truck scanners so we could scan all vehicles as they enter through existing entry points, this would greatly reduce not only the drugs, but the trucks that traffic in humans would be reduced as well. We have a truck scanner at many local military bases locally. This is proven technology.

» More than a billion dollars was authorized last spring and still not even spent on anything. More would be authorized in this latest proposal to keep us safe. Does anyone even have a plan on how to really spend it? It seems like a lot of bluster.

Mexico is not paying for the wall. This was an ill-conceived campaign promise with racial threats to promote a flawed candidate. A wall will not make us any safer. Scanner, law enforcement, more clerks at the border to process claims, doctors to evaluate incoming people, FBI to check for criminals and common sense will protect us more than a fourth century approach. The Chinese built the Great Wall. The only thing it ever did for them in a positive way, was make a great tourist attraction hundreds of years later.

In the meantime 800,000 federal workers are laid off with a free vacation, and we will end up paying them for their time when no work was done. The biggest part of who is laid off is Homeland Security.

It’s ironic that the ones we need are not at work to keep us safe.
