Curtis: We have been honest about range

I would like to use this platform to clarify some points surrounding the proposed development of the Curtis Readiness Training Center in Barhamsville. Curtis Security Consulting, Inc. is disheartened by the amount of misinformation regarding CRTC circulating in New Kent County.

Curtis Security Consulting Inc. has proposed the development of a training facility in New Kent County to service government agencies, military units, contracts and law enforcement entities from the U.S. Our training would consist of three main areas: driving, firearms and security operations. These programs revolve around pre-deployment and sustainment training for personnel performing duties in low-, medium- or high-threat environments overseas or here in the United States.

Our goal is to engage in business that serves a higher purpose: to provide quality training at a well-designed and built, full-spectrum training venue to those who go into harm's way to preserve our way of life, whether they are thousands of miles away or right down the street.

Our proposed facility would consist of two 1.25-mile hard-surface driving courses, a 400-by-400 skid pad with constant watering capability, a 1.5-mile unimproved road course, an off-road course offering beginner through advanced obstacle and recovery training capability, firearms ranges that will support small arms training up to 7.62mm, a ballistic shoot house, Simunitions® / FTX training areas and supporting classrooms that meet government specifications for safety and security.

The company effort has been one of responsible, transparent and thorough investigation at each step. We understand that we must adhere to the New Kent County ordinances and codes when planning, and we have shown careful consideration when it comes to those, the county and our fellow citizens. To this end, we have made efforts to discuss, in detail, with anyone who wants to know and/or is willing to listen about the intent behind the CUP application submitted by CSC. We would like to make clear that some of the “facts” you may have heard misrepresent who we are and our intent, among them:

  • CSC tried to sneak something past the county, is building a combat range, will train foreign military, has not considered the surrounding area or neighbors when planning and designing the facility, or plans to build unsafe ranges
  • Helicopters will be in use on the site
  • Students will train on .50 caliber weapons
  • There will be bombs or tanks on site
  • The site will operate 18 hours a day, every day
  • Noise will be a constant disruption to the area

None of these things are true. CSC has been upfront about our plans. CSC has been truthful about our intent. We have engaged in outreach that has included many members of the public, the New Kent Planning Department, The New Kent Planning Commission and The New Kent Board of Supervisors. CSC has been responsible and thoughtful in its design of the facility. We believe our training facility will be successful and that it will be good not only for New Kent County, but for our country as well.
